"The Stuff I Saw Really Began to Disturb Me": How the U.S. Drone War Pushed Snowden to Leak NSA DocsPublished on May 13, 2014
PART I of "Democracy Now Interview with Edward Snowden" WARNING: (should be 50 Minutes...click if it goes out sooner because of the DN Break which You Tube stops the Video at.)
http://www.democracynow.org - In his new book, "No Place to Hide," journalist Glenn Greenwald provides new details on Edward Snowden's personal story and his motivation to expose the U.S. surveillance state. "The stuff I saw really began to disturb me. I could watch drones in real time as they surveilled the people they might kill," Snowden told Greenwald about his time as a National Security Agency contractor. "You could watch entire villages and see what everyone was doing. I watched NSA tracking people's Internet activities as they typed. I became aware of just invasive U.S. surveillance capabilities had become. I realized the true breadth of this system. And almost nobody knew it was happening."
Greenwald joins us in studio to describe the inside story of the man behind the NSA leaks. "The fact that this individual with no power was knowingly risking everything in his life for a political cause, and really ended up changing the world, I think is a remarkable lesson for everybody," Greenwald says. "It's certainly something that's inspired me and has shaped how I think about things -- and probably will for the rest of my life."

(30,058 posts)the late '90's, why wasn't it a problem before. Snowden is an activists, no more no less, he wanted his name in the paper and has committed crimes to do so. Don't blame this on anything but Snowden unless there are more involved and they want to out themselves. If one of the Paul's had been elected to presidency he would never have dumped the information. He went with this during the Bush administration and if he thought he was going to put Rand Paul in a good light, there are more problems with Rand Paul which has not been touched on as yet.

(1,905 posts)Things weren't going the way he wanted with the government. I'm willing to say he hates Obama also. So he decided to get back at the Obama Administration. I'm wondering what he expected. A parade? A medal? A big fat bonus?
I would like to know who allowed this high school dropout get into the position he got into. It's an insult to all of us who worked hard in intell jobs and a worm like that gets an administration job and with MINIMUM qualifications. I wonder what fraternal organization he belonged to.
It's a wake up call for NSA. That ought to teach them.

"I'm just another guy who sits there day to day in the office, watching what's happening, and goes, 'This is something that's not our place to decide.' The public needs to decide whether these programs or policies are right or wrong," he said.
...
"I'm willing to sacrifice all of that because I can't in good conscience allow the U.S. government to destroy privacy, Internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they're secretly building."
If at first you don't succeed...

(750 posts)As a Vietnam veteran I have a lot of respect for Edward Snowden. Especially for the revelation that is occurring with unfolding evidence where Snowden knew that he was going to slay the White whale of Bush corruption. Sort of like Captain Ahab, but Snowdens mission may very well be accomplished.
To take down the most corrupt government we the people do witness, is twofold corrupt, in proportion that is clandestinely actions of the mainstream media, coupled with the actions of the secret society of the Bush family and friends namely Cheney the connection to Halliburton and Dubai, in a magic digital paper ride they thought was too big to fail.
Nothing fails as long as it is kept secret
I saw the video called the United States of secrets. It forged the evidence in treason that is permeated though out the intelligence agencies and covered up by media. It is so shameful and disgusting loaded with criminal actions that violated the constitution in regular patterns.
The public relations company Booze Allen and Hamilton was not even mentioned. Worse the brother of Mika Brzezinski morning anchor of MSNBC is a key player at Booze Allen and Hamilton. Imagine the insider stuff Mika is privy to. Double that worse, the Bush family and the Bin Laden family have business interest in that very same company. Imagine the metadata the Arab Bin Laden family have. The whole thing is a constitutional wreck of intention deception and profiteering.
