Racism, lies, deception, theft. " You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious." This is the cost of freedom of speech. A bitch for sure but that's the price.

that has little or no moderation of its comments will no doubt be a haven for bigotry, period. Case in point: just look at YouTube. That site has virtually no moderation, so people can call each other various derogatory terms and not face any repercussions for it. Some of the sites on Disqus which actually have moderation also have that problem, except mainly during times where their moderators are not around. Many people are cowards and simply live sad lives, so they need an outlet to vent things which they cannot otherwise do in RL.

With homophobia, it doesn't even matter if the topic is about gays or not.

10. Being human does not equate to being civilized

It just doesn't. There's this ASSumption that we all walk out into the big world with a squeaky clean slate on which we all carry the same exact values and virtues. Right.

I'd wager that some day we'll be able to program robots to act as we wish we did. Sadly, WE are made from an ever-changing mix of genes - not predictable electronic processors. Imagine a recipe where you never knew if you were gonna get cake or sauerkraut when you mixed the ingredients!

Right now, the internet is a wild west frontier. Until a sheriff comes along to make folks fear consequences for their actions, we're gonna suffer the ass holes.

They don't have to win: the misogynists, the capitalists, the bigots - we can just as easily organize against them. We can also educate so that younger folks reading online hear both sides.
