I am a stanch Democrat, but I do not believe in unbridled open immigration.
We certainly must care for these children and the mothers who are with them. But I don't agree with the opinion of many that we must let these kids in because they are escaping violent communities back home in Central America. By that logic, we should be welcoming in millions of Africans and Syrians.
And I also don't agree with allowing a family to enter the US just because one family member is here.
I certainly think that many of the people trying to get here would eventually become good citizens. But we're kidding ourselves if we believe that the large numbers are not a strain on us. The kids do go to school, they do go to emergency rooms. We can't pretend they don't.
I don't know the solution, but I don't believe that everyone who gets across the border gets to stay.

Immigration is what's going to SAVE our asses demographically. Our fertility rate is low and we need people who can work to support the tax base when we age! The assumption that these people are nothing but leaches is disgusting. Every goddam one of us needs help in our lives. Why not welcome them, educate them, care for them, and make them productive members of our society. They came here for a better life!

There's a right and wrong way to do immigration.

My parents had to apply at the embassy, paying interpreters to fill out countless papers, going through the interview, having medical examination, being directed towards the community that could accommodate us, being issued social security cards enabling us to start working almost right away.

Sneaking across the border, avoiding inspection, avoiding checks for potentially contagious infections, stressing the infrastructure of whatever unwilling community they choose ... sorry, there's a better way.

Sure, the U.S. is a nation of immigrants. But first and foremost we are the nation of laws.

So it is possible to legally immigrate while within the framework of the current laws.

My wife also went through the process to immigrate to the US. It was a long road, but possible to make it legally, IF you have "a connection". We came up on a fiance' visa, married, and went through the "green card" to citizenship this past September. Wasn't that expensive, in my point of view. Cost maybe a few thousand dollars...about $700 for the fiance' visa, $700 for the temporary immigrant and another $700 for the permanent immigrant cards (green cards), and probably another $700 for application for citizenship. All the little fees added in: finger printing, medical work, etc.

But have you read ANYTHING about what is going on in Central America? with the gangs and drugs? There are documentaries out there that would make your hair curl on the back of your neck. There is NO WAY I would have my child grow up on those streets, if I could escape by any means. I think we have a nightmare on our southern borders, and we are fookin' around in the Middle East to keep the Israeli's safe, etc. How about we focus on our own back yard?? THIS is what is forcing these people to flee. It's not just economics. It's basic survival!

The only real way to fix this situation is to address poverty, corruption, and crime in Mexico and Central America.

In Mexico they government and Monsanto has imposed GM corn onto the farmers. GM corn needs more water and fertilizer. That strains aquifers and causes salinization of groundwater. This will only accelerate desertification.

I am the descendent of migrants who saw history as a thing that could not be denied. The natives could not deny us entry and no amount of their fighting back stopped us coming, the dam of our needs and desires burst upon them. The world will be transformed in the coming decades, and we need to be ready.

... ain't what is used to be. Thirty-some years ago, when my husband came here on a student visa for a PhD, the process of jumping through the hoops was relatively fast. Transitioning from H-1 wasn't then the nightmare it is now. From the wait while his job was advertized far and wide--and if any U.S. citizens met the requirements and wanted the position, they took priority (which I agree with). After that nail-biting time, that meant the labor clearance hurdle was done. Then the queue for the permanent residence (green card) status.

From the start of the labor clearance to obtaining the green card, I figure it was about six - eight months. Away back then. When Jesus rode dinosaurs, ya know.

Today (and in my opinion), the biggest problem for educated wannabe immigrants is trusting the would-be employer who claims, "Yes, sign this contract and I'll apply for your green card." An H-1 is good for three years with an optional three year extension. I can't tell you how many brilliant kids trust these sharks. And boy howdy, at the end of those six years, they find Employer XYZ had absolutely NO intention of filing the necessary paperwork.

Why should they bother? After all, there's a fresh crop of brilliant kids lined up to take their places.

Can we spell e-x-p-l-o-i-t-a-t-i-o-n? Corporate America sure can!
