A Republican woman must be someone who is particularly clueless.

For example, I would answer Ms. Elmers by running down the GOP legislative agenda, without using the term war on women, and then asking the rhetorical question, "how does this benefit women?" Since she is a traditional Victorian woman (apparently, at least, and I'm sorry that there's no nicer to say it), she might have an answer to that that has been provided by the misogynists at the RNC, some shadowy think tank funded by the Koch brothers (David Koch is a libertarian who puts up an awful lot of money to put modern women in "their place&quot or Bryan Fischer or some other televangelist from the Jerry Falwell school of Bible-thumping half-wits.

On the other hand, the misogynists at the RNC or the Koch-funded think tank or the Jerry Falwell school of Bible-thumping half-wits may have neglected to give Ms. Elmers the memo. In that case, she will stand there, looking clueless until a flash of enlightenment covers her face to indicate that she gets it and I smile because I got through to her. But almost as fast as that bright glow of enlightenment came over Ms. Elmers' face, a dark, foreboding look takes its place. "Oh, dear," she says. "The Koch brothers are going to strike me with a bolt of thunder from a ten thousand foot peak near Topeka, Kansas for having such thoughts."

Nonsense, you say? Well, anyone who believes the underlying premises to the Republicans' war on women probably believes that there's a ten thousand foot peak in Kansas from where the Koch brothers hurl thunderbolts at any libertarian woman who even for a moment discovers she has a mind of her own.

I'm all for having fewer public displays of bullshit in congress, but I doubt any of these people are interested in addressing the real issues or they would have done it already. Ellmers has had plenty of opportunities but she made different choices. She has made speeches saying how much life sucks in the Dem controlled states that have implemented the PPACA, while completely ignoring the fact that those states are seeing more of their people get insurance and care while her own constituents are missing out.

She serves as the current chairwoman of the Republican Women’s Policy Committee.

When Rep. Renee Ellmers talks about what needs to happen to secure the future of the GOP, she tells a story she heard from a staffer who, while packing up the district campaign office after the 2012 elections, stopped to chat with a passer-by.“The woman said, ‘I’m really glad your boss won,’” Ellmers recalled. “‘But I’m really glad I got to keep my woman’s rights.’“And that really struck me,” the North Carolina Republican continued, “because it told me that there are women in this country, even in my own hometown, who do not think the Republican Party cares about women, that they would lose their women’s rights if they had a Republican president. … And I thought, ‘That’s really dangerous.’”

Ellmers is one of only 19 women in the House Republican Conference, but as the chairwoman of the burgeoning Republican Women’s Policy Committee she is making it her mission to mobilize her colleagues to prove the party is not just filled with “graying, older white men,” as she said in a recent interview.

“I think the culture that has existed within our own party has been led by men, by and large,” Ellmers acknowledged. “Women have not necessarily been putting themselves out there for recognition. … Now we have a group of women empowering each other, whereas in the past women were more independent agents.”
