It's an unwritten rule in football, if you come out, you'll be crippled at the next practice. Hockey players are cooler because most of them are European and Canadian where being gay is much less of a big deal. Plus there is a heavy streak of fundy Christianity in football that doesn't exist in hockey.

Good on the NHL for this.

I'm waiting for the book by recently retired Quarterback A or Quarterback B (there are at least 2 that are gay or bi) detailing his on-the-road sexual exploits with his teammates.
Bound to happen sooner or later.
