This is Not America - by David Bowie, Lyle Mays & Pat Metheny

From the movie "The Falcon and the Snowman", released in 1985 about a couple of young spies, Andrew Daulton Lee and Christopher Boyce, convicted of espionage by giving classified secrets to the Soviet Union. Lee was a cocaine dealer, hence the name "The Snowman" and Boyce was interested in falconry, hence the name "The Falcon." Based on a true story.

The words could apply to a number of different situations.

cassette tape long before I ever saw the movie. I guess I bought it because I was listening to a lot of jazz at the time, and Pat Matheny was credited with the music. And you are right the words say it all and apply to so much that is going on now.

This song and it's reprise on the soundtrack and in the movie have always been one of my favorites.
Great performances by both Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton as the title characters.

Thanks for the great post and memory.

Peace

Mike Garson (the keyboardist) used to visit my old work very often. He even gave a demonstration (I believe on composing) that I missed.

He seems like a very nice guy. I love his style, I recognized it immediately in that performance.

I know my comments are off topic here, but thanks for sharing this!

I'm a piano player myself!!! I always want to know about hip keyboard players.

Back in college (1970s) the keyboard player I wanted to be was Rick Wakeman of Yes. His "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" was a big hit then. He's incredibly fast and incredibly bright. He's into astronomy like my avatar, another famous rock star.

Video of Bowie taken from Live at the Beeb in 2000.

I have a Kurzweil synth I bought in 1995 approximately like the one in the video (couldn't see the model number on the back) that I love. Amazing string sounds and lots of percussion banks. Used to use Cakewalk software to record and arrange with. Doesn't have the heavy action of my upright but it it somewhat weighted.

I have a Kurzweil 88. I love that thing! Solid metal case and very heavy, but it has a great piano sound.
