A Homophobic Preacher's Message Was Stopped Short By The Students He Was Hoping To Reach

Curated by Matt Orr
An intolerant Christian preacher took his message to a college campus, telling students their homosexuality and other "sins" would send them to Hell. But this time, he was met with Christians who would rather not hear his message of intolerance, but instead, drown out his words with a song about love. That love part, that's the part I like best. Let's do more of that.

A lot of the students are what you'd call 'cowboy' Christians, who worked ranches around there and were learning range management, etc. They were quiet, humble and respectful people.

One day the KKK came up to the campus to hold a rally and recruit, as this was an all white area for many miles with racists here and there. I don't know how they got their permission, or if they didn't. The university branch was on a very large piece of land, but most people realized that something was going on.

The students' response was was priceless:

They came out of class and told the KKK they weren't wanted. They then at them until they finally tucked tail and left the campus.

This was almost 20 years ago. It was a good day.

We had a few of those wackos on our campus. I observed a common theme of their behavior. They seemed to enjoy the attention and didn't care that they had an extremely negative reaction. After that I decided not to give them the dignity of my attention.

I saw him at the University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University. He would stand on the Quad with a microphone and speaker and point at students as they walked by. The women were all "whores" because of the way they dressed or their make-up. The men he called "queers", and he would occasionally get someone to react to him, at which point he would start screaming in their faces telling them they were going to hell for their "sins". He sometimes drew quite a crowd, and I would stop to watch as he surely intended.

He was finally exposed when the married with children Smock impregnated a young follower. A nasty divorce trial followed in which it was revealed that the charismatic young preacher had been planting his "faith seed" all over the college campuses he visited.

There is moral in this somewhere, or at least a lesson to be learned.
