The "Art of War" Manipulating Public Opinion With Photographs: ISIS, etc.

Professor Julian Stallabrass, of the Courtauld Institute of Art, talks to British Host of "Going Underground" Afshin Rattansi about how ISIS have used imagery. Whilst people may have become more aware of the manipulation of images in the media, it still has a massive effect on public opinion. He warns that news media has become ‘hollowed out’ by the introduction of more business values, and has a tendency to use the video packages handed out by the Pentagon and others, which are often hard to analyse independently. Embedded journalists, those attached to military units, produce standard ‘propaganda’, which is often used without acknowledgement of the source.

It’s difficult to find populations without cameraphones that can talk directly back, and he believes broadcasters should be using both sources. He points to the example of Gaza, where the flow of footage from cameraphones and the like did a great deal of damage to the image of the Israeli government. There have been attempts to subvert embedded journalism, with artists Chanarin and Broomberg, who were offered an embedded, taking photos for the military on digital cameras which they then deleted so they couldn’t be used, but exposing photographic paper when newsworthy events happened to create abstract images. He points out that their use of the military to create these images was as much part of the point as the imagery itself. And he says that ‘journalism is the first draft of history’, but by looking at a diverse range of media it is possible to expose yourself to different types of propaganda, and then critically decide how they relate.

1. TY, Koko, K & R & once again, a huge thanks to RT for airing what our own MSM dare not discuss.

As a nation, we should be all fed up with the lack of real conversation on these critical issue in our own MSM. Where are the fearless journos of yesteryear? Fearlessness & real investigative journalism, that's what it's going to take to make all of us believe once again in the power of the pen here at home, the ability to challenge the status quo & to push back and rock the boat. We need to lead the way, this is what we once did.

This is how we change the world (or at least how we used to), we challenge, we ask the hard questions & we dig for the truth.

focusing on UK issues and guests. "RT America" focuses on US Issues with US Staff and Reporters.

DU Admins said it's up to the Hosts to decide. There's no Official DU Policy about "RT."

The "Democratic" of Democratic Underground doesn't extend to the Kremlin's propaganda channel, and DU should be ashamed to have this trash endorsed on its front page. They might as well open the floodgates and let Stormfront, FOX, and ISIS post their lies here.

that the pictures of the victims of Assads' alleged gas attack were recycled from the story of Husseins gas attack on the Kurds. This is at the 2 minute mark. Both of which might be phony pictures of realistic dolls that look like dead babies.
Don't believe anything you hear, and only .01% of what you see.
Ever wonder why no one trusts the MSM?

11. I notice those who are being critical here are only addressing the source, not the content.

Arguments should be made or broken on logic, facts and critical thinking, not by attacking the messenger. (Which in this case may be fair criticisms of the source, but are non-the-less irrelevant.)

Seems that is some kind of "Outdated" view of being an "Informed Citizen."

Some seem to think we look at the SOURCE rather than READ THE READ to make a decision about the content.

Others seem to feel we should "BAN SOURCES" in fear that "if we read" we might be in danger of changing our opinion because we are "VULNERABLE" to being manipulated by Propaganda that we don't have the "brain ability" to understand and we might become tools of "DARK/EVIL FORCES" trying to pollute our minds.

It's really incredible to see this kind of stuff on a Democratic Website. If I wanted to be Ignorant I'd go find some RW TeaParty Site with and Avatar of Sarah Palin or some Fundie Preacher Hosting it.

Again....sad to see this Censorship on Dem Website by Participants. I'm glad the Admins are not partakers of this and that people like me, and others who question, can still post here.
