To this day he is sold as a semi religious icon, at least they do not burn crosses on lawns like another prominent order of American Knighthood.

(45,251 posts)6. In Boston, some years back, someone beheaded his statue, which stands in Christopher Columbus Park.
The neighborhood used to be an almost exclusively poor Italian neighborhood. Now, because it also a waterfront neighborhood that is convenient to both Government Center and Massachusetts General Hospital (among other things), it's a mix of restaurants, yuppies, students and some of the Italians who have lived in it for decades and are now elderly.
Christopher Columbus Park occupies really choice waterfront real estate.
