(12,882 posts)I've met like minds via these mediums that I never would have met otherwise. And with the price of petrol, there's a strong resistance to driving any distance to hang out with those of like consistence. That said - I don't and WON'T own a "smart phone" (otherwise known as pocket computer). When I get up from this PC keyboard, I deal with real.

(1,648 posts)Otherwise)...I look around me to answer folks in stores only to see them talking to a piece of tech...ooops...then of course there's about 10% of the phoners who are apparently deaf...shouting into their piece of tech...I'm 66 and don't want to walk around staring at a piece of tech...life is just too short.

(5,069 posts)I have no cell phone and no micro-wave oven. I have sensed what the message says but from my generation if one is without the obligatory accoutrements, one risks being labeled a luddite. Truly profound to hear this message from someone apparently younger than 40.
A thought - the message misses the notion of how extremely wasteful technology has become...how the embedded obsolescence fuels solid (much of it toxic) waste .....and similarly how the resources to build such wasteful technology drives endless wars of occupation/colonialism.....It seems that technology is driving capitalism.

(41,047 posts)by poverty workers is rarely covered. Also the real story of brutal labor used for mfg. these and many consumer products in places like Taiwan's Foxconn Factory, famously referred to by Mitt in the 47% talk. Much out of sight and mind to western consumers. In so doing we are fueling the prevailing neoliberal free market system of economics dominant worldwide.
