In the years before; his wife's rental property was foreclosed on, he was injured several times in Iraq, their other home was being foreclosed on, he didn't make E7 rank (which they counted on to pay the bills), then he was sent off to afghanistan (they were told earlier that he wouldn't be sent to combat again).
