Keith Olbermann rips CBS analyst for griping about Kobe Bryant’s support of Eric Garner protests

ESPN host Keith Olbermann blasted former colleague Doug Gottlieb on Wednesday for complaining about NBA star Kobe Bryant and his teammates’ show of support for the protests against the Eric Garner grand jury decision.

“It’s called empathy, Doug, and you don’t have it,” Olbermann said.

Gottlieb, who currently works for CBS Sports Radio, criticized Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers teammates on Tuesday after most of the team took the court wearing shirts bearing Garner’s final words, “I can’t breathe.” The phrase has become a symbol and hashtag for the protests around the country calling for police to face greater accountability after a grand jury failed to indict the New York City police officer who was found to have choked Garner this past July.

(snip)
“So, somebody who makes a lot of money is not only not allowed to protest on behalf of those who don’t, but he should be criticized for sticking out his neck when a problem may not necessarily be his problem?” he asked sarcastically. “Because, of course, unless something bad has happened to you personally, it hasn’t really happened. And your response to it or protest against it is somehow invalid or insincere or worthless, because of course, only people with nothing much to lose should ever protest. Those whose incomes depend on selling merchandise should never say, ‘Hey, maybe my standing up right now is more important than me making more money.’ Because what kind of example is that for the kids, implying that maybe justice is more important than personal wealth?”

Gottlieb talking about this on his show. He was going on how law enforcement will unfan the Lakers and Kobe will lose sponsors, etc. It was pitiful. I turned him off.

a little weasel. He couldn't make it in the NBA - perhaps he's jealous of Kobe!

Man do I miss him doing this. He's so good, so honest, so righteous and so acidly funny. Glad to see he can do some editorializing on his show.

he has been chomping at the bit to get back to commenting on real news. I sure wish he would come back as a pundit because his passion for speaking out on current events is sorely missed. I also wonder how long it will be before he will take flak for speaking out the way he has been doing and lose his ESPN job. Come back Keith - WE MISS YOU (and MSNBC needs you!)

She was being treated for psychiatric problems, and the last thing she needed was an act of violence perpetrated upon her. Then she was so terrified by the death threats and harassment from his fans, that she refused to testify in his rape case.

In fact, his behavior was a lot like the cops who ultimately killed Eric Garner. The main difference was that Kobe's victim lived to tell about it.

Gottlieb is a freakin' d-bag, but Kobe should've started caring about the victims of violence long ago...starting with his own victim.
