Q: Where does the compressed air come from?

Hint: What compresses the air?

Another hint: Google thermodynamics and entropy.

It is just like hydrogen fuel, it is not an energy source, only a way to temporarily store energy generated by another method.

So it is no wonder that Pat "creationist and worst toup ever" Boone is pitching this.

What's wrong with 4 wheels? But I do like the idea of an air car. I just don't like the 3 wheel cars, I like the other ones they showed.

And then there's Peter Sellers driving one.

The film is one of Sellers' greatest comedies, The Party (Birdie Num, Num).

But he drives a Morgan three-wheeler. And yes, that is Claudine Longet.

How does the air get compressed? Unicorn farts?

This does not run without emissions. I simply moves the emissions to somewhere else (the electrical power plant) so that the driver can pretend those emissions don't exist. It's a net loser because you have to burn hydrocarbons to generate electricity and then use that electricity to compress air, and then use that compressed air to move cylinders. Each step in that process wastes a certain percentage of the energy fed into it. It is so much more efficient to burn the hydrocarbons directly in an internal combustion engine. Instead of pretending that it is a clean car, why not be honest about the fact that you are burning hydrocarbons?

Oh, what's that you say? That wind generators will power the compressors? Realistically, what percentage of U.S. power comes from wind? (ANS: 5.7%) That is the maximum percentage that could currently be used to power the compressors. The other 94.3% comes from coal, natural gas, nuclear, and hydro. To repeat, this is not pollution free. It's simply dumping the pollution into somebody else's back yard.

BTW: This was posted on youtube in 2010.

You just can't store much energy in compressed air. Air cars of this type have been "promoted" for more than 20 years. At most, they can go a few miles. There is never any sales or manufacturing. Just promotion.

They do say you need to fill up at a special compressed air station.
Kind of a problem if you run out of air ... anywhere.

How do you compress air? By using energy. Potentially you could use solar or wind power to run a motor to compress the air, but air powered motors are notoriously inefficient, and compressed air is a lousy means of storing energy. Full-electric vehicles are much more energy efficient.

50 mph max (on our roads? yea, right) means only very local driving. 80-100 mile range, no regeneration.

They haven't made it to the US market in the past because the weight of necessary safety features kills the speed and mileage.

And this is to reduce urban pollution? That's what mass transit is for. Where will we be parking all of these, say, in Manhattan?

Plus, as everyone else is saying, unless you are Schwarzenegger and have a bicycle pump, I hope you don't get stuck somewhere.

have been around since the dawn of the horseless transport. Google the Davis 3-wheeler for one.

I wouldn't want one of these air-scooters given I have to vie for road-space with oodles of giant cowboy phallus symbols on our country roads. But in town - on surface streets - and not trying to haul home sheet rock or cinder blocks - why not? And they DO mention powering it with renewables - wind - solar - wave energy. What's wrong with that? On the plus side, your air tank is less likely to catch fire than shorted lithium-ion batteries!

Let's face it, this is a novelty.

Electric motors are the future powered by something that doesn't require charging.

The dream is a fusion power cell that puts out electricity with the only waste product being neutrinos.
