Why not? Because according to Fundies, and the GOP that caters to them,
1. Jesus is still very much alive
2. They quote and proclaim deference to whatever he has said
3. The nominee can simply say that Jesus speaks to him and is in constant communication. That's not crazy, that's the normal born again Christian mantra. Even GWB was told personally by God to invade Iraq.
3. According to one of their Christian sects, Mormonism, which was the faith of their last nominee, Jesus was an American for a while at least. No more disqualified than Ted Cruz.
