Much of the South was Democratic as a reaction to the posture of the Republican party during reconstruction.

It's not new for her. She ran and was elected as a D.

Given that her mother held the same position for many years, and then she took up where mom left off, then having the weight of incumbency to stay on the ballot as a D seems like a much more secure proposition for keeping the office.

had the 2 guys who were seeking a marriage license on and one of them explained that that family has occupied political offices since the 1800's and still does. There are lots of cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. working there as well. The commentator even remarked they didn't realize one single family runs the who county and has for decades.

edited because I called it a city where she worked and found it was really county gov't.
