Bernie Sanders Joins Historic NAACP March to Push for Equality, Lincoln Memorial, Wash, DC Sept. 15

Presidential candidate BERNIE SANDERS speaks about democracy and voter suppression yesterday at the NAACP hosted 1,000 mile JOURNEY FOR JUSTICE.

On August 1 the March for Justice began in Selma, Alabama and ended yesterday, Sept. 15 at the LINCOLN MEMORIAL in Washington, DC.

The month and a half long trek by marchers advocated for VOTER EQUALITY in minority communities and fair criminal justice and education systems in the US.

The March ended at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the national site where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about ending the suppression of BLACK VOTING RIGHTS 50 YEARS AGO.

In 1965, President Johnson passed the landmark VOTING RIGHTS ACT, the VRA, 50 years ago to eradicate illegal voter suppression and disenfranchisement of blacks, minorities and the poor widespread in post Civil War South and other areas for decades.

In 2013, the Right Wing dominated US SUPREME COURT gutted key protections in the VRA, allowing new voting restrictions and obstructions to discourage citizens from exercising their right to vote, an injustice that Civil Rights groups are actively fighting.

Marian Wright Edelman used to be Hillary's BOSS.

It goes far beyond simple recognition of who the Clinton's are.

Good information. I still have a question in my mind about whether Bernie can get POC to listen to him; not because of Bernie, but rather because of human thought inertia.

We must keep our 'Eyes on the Prize' yes. Loved that wonderful 1987 PBS series on America's Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965 narrated by Julian Bond. He is greatly missed.

When young I first met Julian Bond at a speech he gave at a local college, then had the chance to see him speak and say hello again eight years ago. What giant and legend Julian Bond is in American history and the Civil Rights movement.

but Hillary Clinton and Marian Wright Edelman are STILL friends, although Edelman has said that she and Hillary can't do politics.

Bernie Sanders does not have the INTIMATE connections with the black community that Hillary Clinton does (and Bill...but moreso Hillary)

Nevertheless his outstanding record of working on the front lines for 40 years advocating Civil Rights and equality for all remains and cannot be overlooked no matter how hard some try.

Bernie Sanders participation in the NAACP Journey for Justice March yesterday with hundreds in Washington and many other significant events attest to his conviction, principles and determination in upholding democracy and progress in this country, for all.

I am saying that Bill and Hillary Clinton have extremely long-lasting relationships with people in the black community and (with the possible exception of John Lewis) Bernie Sanders has not.

I'm talking about two very different levels of relationship, here.

Even Barack Obama didn't have relationships in the black community to the extent that the Clintons had. If Obama had to work for it, why shouldn't Sanders?

17. Senator Sanders and the Clintons have different associations with blacks, people of color

and others I don't disagree. For 25 years Sen. Sanders has formed close relationships with his fellow members of Congress joining them on legislative and advocacy issues as pictured here at a US Capitol rally- US Representatives Keith Ellison (MN), Barbara Lee (CA), John Conyers (MI), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX) and many others.

Over decades Bernie Sanders has shown his support and spoken at many Civil Rights events and occasions including the recent 50 year anniversary event of the VRA, the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965, held at the MLK Jr. Memorial in DC on Aug. 6 and attended by Martin Luther King III and other Civil Rights leaders.
Bernie was well received in June by hundreds of Latino attendees he addressed at a conference of La Raza, the largest and oldest Latino advocacy organization in the US. In Louisiana he was a guest and speaker last July at a meeting of the SCLC, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the major Civil and Political Rights organization founded in 1957 closely identified with Martin Luther King Jr., its first president.

Re intimates and personal friendships like Marian Wright Edelman I don't believe Bernie golfs which Bill Clinton enjoyed with advisor and friend Vernon Jordan or vacations at Martha's Vineyard and the Hamptons like the Clintons. I'm not that familiar with the Sanders or Obamas personal associations. Whether Bernie's current 2016 campaign message and platform and his longstanding dedication to the advancement of all working Americans including blacks and people of color translate into voting support we will see and I certainly hope so.

Bernie works for, among, and with the people, and allies with civil rights, social justice and environmental groups and leaders. In the photo here he's shown walking with justice marchers at this week's NAACP Journey for Equality alongside US Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton of DC, US Rep. G.K. Butterfield of North Carolina, and others.
Clearly the Sanders and Clintons are public officials with different approaches. It takes all kinds in this world. Fortunately I've had the opportunity of meeting both at political and personal occasions.

it was inexplicable to me, for example, that Bernie turned out a crowd of mostly white supporters in Atlanta, Georgia (Michaleen Crowell is the name of one of the staffers, I forget the other man but he is a man...John Lewis gave that staffer a wonderful sendoff to Senator staffers, it's in the CR but I'm too lazy to look it up now).

These are staffers (albeit Senate staff as opposed to campaign staff...although Senate rules do allow for Senate staff to do SOME unpaid work for a campaign) that I would think would know how to make the optics on something like that a little better.

As far as my "low post count", I do most of my posting at Daily Kos and I am an editor of the Black Kos group...I've known for almost a year, though, that my cousin posts here at DU and one of my fellow BK editors encouraged me to make myself known and, as it were, to stop lurking...

of people of color is a despicable and crude attempt to bolster others who don't come close to his activism and fight for rights and equality for all- blacks, POC, women, LGBT people, immigrants, the poor, seniors, Vets and the vulnerable for over 40 years. Period!
