Brazils Supreme Court has come out strongly in response to widespread corruption in their elections in recent years: theyve banned corporate donations in politics outright. Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola (Think Tank), and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), hosts of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Amid a massive corruption scandal which has tarnished Brazils political class and driven the countrys president to the brink of impeachment, the Brazilian supreme court has banned corporate donations to candidates and parties in future elections.
With eight votes in favour and three against, the court declared late on Thursday that the rules allowing companies to donate to election campaigns were unconstitutional.
Around 76% of the over R$3bn ($760m) donated during last years election campaigns for the presidency, senate and congress came from corporate entities. Both the ruling leftwing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and the main opposition Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) received over R$1bn each.*

(24,324 posts)1. How can they do that?
What about free speech? What about the capitalist way?
And who ever heard of a country with green and yellow?
Only the Pack should be allowed yellow and green.
I just don't get it. What is the world coming to.

Sao Paulo just keeps looking better and better. Hope there's enough economic health left to sell my U.S. home before they take the wrecking ball to that again.

(8,175 posts)3. Brazil is in crisis
That's why they are able to do this now.
I'm afraid we will need to reach crisis level too, before we can git-r-done.
I wish it weren't so. I'm hoping Bernie will help push this country closer to this goal, if not quite accomplishing it...but of course if he can accomplish it before we hit crisis level like Brazil, that would be fantastic.
