David Edwards | 29 Sep 2015 at 11:33 ET
House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) suggested on Monday that both of his parents might be alive if the government had used Planned Parenthood funding for cancer research.
At a hearing inspired by anti-Planned Parenthood videos, Chaffetz opened by choking up as he explained that both of his parents had died from cancer.
Cancer in this country kills about 1,500 people a day a day, the chairman noted. And yet, our federal government only spends $5 billion to fight it. If they were shooting 1,500 people a day, if there were rockets coming in, we would be fighting this with everything weve got.
We dont spend enough on cancer, he continued. And the reason Im passionate about the hearing today is weve got a lot of health care providers who in their hearts know they are trying to provide good.

Several times, it has been pointed out in the hearing that the federal monies that Planned Parenthood receives is in reimbursement for health care services that have been provided and that abortion is not paid for by federal monies except in the cases that are allowed by federal law.

(51,550 posts)THAT is what federal money is going to, NOT ABORTIONS. Not a penny of federal money is being used by PP for abortions.

(2,382 posts)Well then maybe he and his fellow Republicans shouldn't have slashed federal funding for cancer research. And let's not forget that the fetal tissue research that he and his dirtbag buddies are screeching about may very well lead to a cure for cancer. It helped in finding a polio vaccine. OOPS! I said the V-word!
My hatred of Republicans burns hotter than the surface of the Sun. Fuck 'em all. And for the record, I'm a cancer survivor.

(10,270 posts)I would never disparage the legitmate Grief or suffering of a fellow Human...it sucks I know I've been there. But I ALSO know that once the grieving process is done in an Adult way, that's healthy, there's closure and we can reference what we have lost in a neutral or Objective way.
It's only NOT this way for children and, as Mr Committee Chair up there demonstrates, emotionally stunted AdultChildren. In my opinion, this is where the great majority of America's conservatives are at--emotionally stunted children who never outgrew the illusion that the Universe and everything in it exists to exalt and honor THEM. It's why evolution cannot be correct, because that would mean that what they believe would have to be WRONG. It's why nothing is EVER their own fault..not racism, not poverty, not injustice..nothing. Because God and Ronald Reagan told them how Special they are, how IMPORTANT they are, and anything else is just a dirty lie because the people who didnt DESERVE the love of God and Ronald Reagan because of Sin or Welfare or Not-Whiteness or Not-Straightnness or whatever, those people just aren't being fair because they want THE SAME treatment as you, but they shouldn't get to have it because YOU'RE BETTER, ( you were TOLD SO) and they hate you for it.
The Republican Party is populated almost totally with Mental Children. It's past time the rest of the country sent them to their room until they can learn sharing, empathy, and how to play correctly with the toys they have been GIVEN. Fuck em if they don't like it.

And how did this individual vote on the ACA, did he or did he not vote to shut down the government because of health care.
How much funding has he and his band of hypocrites taken out of the NIH budget to fight "cancer" a lot.
And did he or did he not, call before this committee the individuals from CMP to testify------------------------don't think so.
Let me say that when the "budget " comes before this Congress think "reconciliation", these right wing twits will find a way to attack health care especially Planned Parenthood and get those funds out of there---------------------they don't care, and the individual states that are trying to pass laws to shut down these places will do just that, take the money and give it to something else---------------end of story

(23,973 posts)...stre-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-ech there, Mr. Chaffetz. Did you hurt yourself doing that?
Chaffetz, you arrogant little shit. Your parents did not die because Planned Parenthood got federal funding. Perhaps if they had used their services, your parents may have lived longer. You are trying to become relevant in Congress, and with this little charade, it just made you a pissy-boy laughing stock. And actually, Washington funded $4.8 billion in cancer research in the 2013 fiscal year, and funding has averaged $4.9 billion over the past six years. Planned Parenthood received $540.6 million....so get your facts straight before you go mouthing off. I actually hope you take the time to come on here and look at this... you won't, like the rest of your right -winged POS's.

(6,699 posts)He is so torn up over his mother who died from cancer, and his father who died from cancer. He would do everything possible to "wage war" (my words) on cancer by funding it "quadruple"... Does this pudgy little hypocrite donate to cancer research out of HIS pocket, on fook'n dime. I'm guessing not.....or maybe one fook'n dime.

(1,539 posts)The Republicans pretend that health care services provided by PP are illegal and criminal. However there is no evidence they violated any laws.
They also are intent in getting between women and their healthcare provider of choice. They pretend that payments from medicare and medicaid are a gift and not reimbursement for services provided.

(9,350 posts)Planned Parenthood only get about $450 million per year in federal funding. Defunding Planned Parenthood would not allow him to quadruple the amount of money going to Cancer research. The Department of Defense, on the other hand, gets about $1 trillion dollars per year. Chaffetz and others in Congress could cut at least $100-$200 billion dollars from the defense budget. That money could then be used to increase funding for Cancer research. Chaffetz and his friends could also get rid of tax loopholes, like carried interest, that help wealthy Americans pay less taxes. Estimates for how much money can be brought in from higher taxes on the profits of hedge fund managers is between $18-$180 billion in ten years.
Chaffetz also asked if Planned Parenthood needs a government subsidy. The oil and gas industry gets about $2-$8 billion in government subsidies. Exxon Mobil is the fifth most profitable company in the world. It had profits of between $26-$32 billion in one year. However, most Republicans claim Exxon Mobil and other oil and gas companies need billions of dollars in government subsidies.
If Jason Chaffetz really wanted to increase funding for Cancer research there are far better ways to do so than defunding Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is not the reason Cancer research is so poorly funded. Facts show Planned Parenthood gets far less funding than even Cancer research. There is a part of me that thinks Chaffetz used Cancer research in the hopes that some people would think Planned Parenthood is getting more funding than it actually receives. Defunding Planned Parenthood would do little to improve the funding of Cancer research. It would be far better to reduce the funding of other government agencies, raise taxes, and/or end, or reduce subsidies from other groups that truly do not need subsidies.

(21,751 posts)Take maybe one tenth of our military budget and use it to assemble and finance the top professionals in cancer research and find a cure, a prevention program, a treatment regimen to extend life and improve life for cancer victims.
Perhaps we could save some of those 1500 people a day, or at least give them some hope for a longer, happier life.
Perhaps we should not be subsidizing tobacco and tobacco products. Maybe we should allow medical marijuana for cancer patients. Maybe we should subsidize cancer screenings and develop new methods for early detection, the number one factor in positive outcomes for cancer patients. Maybe we should strengthen clean air and water regulations, as well as workplace regulations for folks handling hazardous materials. How about providing HPV vacines to our children? Or subsidize alternative energy sources to replace ones that burn fuels and pollute our air and water? How about expanding Medicaid so the poor can have a shot at state of the art cancer care?
How many of these proposals would you support, you hypocritical prick?

(8,394 posts). . . i lost both my parents to cancer, too -- lung cancer, 12 days apart. This isn't a choice between funding cancer research and women's health. And your pathetic show of crocodile tears serves only to cheapen any genuine grief you may hold concerning your own parents!
