There was stunned silence in the General Assembly Hall on Monday as U.S. President Barack Obama warned leaders against falling back to pre-United Nations days, in which strong nations imposed their will by force against the weak. There was apparent disbelief as he said it was Russia and China that wanted a return to the rules that applied for most of human history and that pre-date this institution.
These ancient rules included the belief that power is a zero-sum game; that might makes right; that strong states must impose their will on weaker ones; that the rights of individuals dont matter; and that in a time of rapid change, order must be imposed by force.

(6,419 posts)What kind of BS is this anyway? Consortium News crap that prefers China and Russia to the USA? Do you have any idea of the reality of the average freedom-loving person in Russia or China? A gay man in Russia getting hounded by a government-sponsored death squad? Someone in China who wants to form a little group of people to protest a government decision and ends up in prison because that is strictly forbidden? And this Malloy/ConsortiumNews BS wants to make some equivalency between the US and Russia/China--or say US is worse? What a crock. Compare the US-dominated western Europe after WW2 vs the Russian-dominated eastern Europe. Can you spot the difference? Compare genuine democracy-building efforts by the US around the globe to complete lack of democracy in Russia and China.
That is my rant and welcome to it. Your OP is BS.

(1,325 posts)Wonder why the middle east is a smoldering mess of broken bodies and rubble? Well that's the consequence of lil' Bush's invasion. The US has a long and sordid history of rolling into places and upsetting the order. Smedley Butler's war is a racket is a good start if you're not sure about this.
From the essay:
Since 1945, the U.S. has participated in dozens of documented invasions and overthrows of sovereign governments that resisted U.S. hegemony the strongest nation imposing its will militarily on the weak. Among the best known are the 1953 and 1954 coups in Iran and Guatemala, and the invasions of Vietnam and Iraq. There were other democracies overthrown to install monarchies or dictatorships, such as Mobutu in Congo in 1961, Suharto in Indonesia in 1965 and Pinochet in Chile in 1973.
Nobody seems to remember the ousting of Zelaya in Honduras and our immediate support for the coup in Venezuela against Hugo Chavez. Sad to say, but our beloved country is hardly the champion of democracy.
To point out the folly of our country does not make me a defender of Russia or China, just a criticizer who thinks we can do much better.

(8,219 posts)Now that Mike Malloy has said it ...
I saw the video of Obama's speech the day he gave it. All I can say is that I was dumbstruck at what he can manage to say with a straight face, the phrase about "strong nations imposing their will by force against the weak" being probably the most abhorrent. Oh, the irony!!
Just about everything that came out of Obama's mouth in that speech was, shall we say, umm.....factually incorrect. It was painful to watch.

(33 posts)I quit listening to his show when he seemed to stray away from geopolitics. I'd like to see him jump more in the fray in that regard as he is a great truthseeker.
