... if the whales can see the northern lights and if they're enjoying them? Actually, having rewatched the clip, I think I've just answered my own question: It appears they do. Judging by the position of the pectoral fins, most of those whales were surfacing rolled over to one side, which is unusual behavior. By rolling over to one side, of course, that positions one eye skyward.

I'll be damned.

I watched for it the second time around.

Third time around, I just closed my eyes and listened to the waves.

Unbelievably magnificent film footage. With all the abuse we've heaped upon nature, we all need a moment like this.

My first thought was how wonderful our planet is when we're not destroying it. I'd be proud if alien tourists came to earth just see sights like this.

One of the reasons I thought to check for the position of the pectoral fins was the sound: What I was hearing was first, kind of a gurgling sound, as the whale did a little breathing through shallow water as it swam on its side, followed by a regular clean exhale (the "pooosh!&quot after it righted itself and breathed normally. I've been on a few whale watches, so I'm familiar with the typical sounds, and these sounds were different.

Absolutely agree with the wonder of all this. This is a spectacular, wonderful planet.

Here's a gif based on satellite imagery of the Aurora Australis, or southern lights.

Joe Shiabotnik.

I love BBC News and read it often but somehow missed this beautiful footage.

Agree, it's breathtaking!

Hope you're enjoying a great weekend.

It's only right.

Anything less would be a crime.
