German pilots could spot the difference a long way off, the smaller under nose air intake of the Yak 9, and the lack of a bubble canopy.



Like the later Spitfires, the Yak 9 was re-engined and vastly superior in performance. About as fast as any piston aircraft of its day, and more maneuverable than most of its adversaries.
