Why do I get the sneaking suspicion that he sees things a bit differently now that he is definitely a lifelong member of the top 1%?

One of the reasons Conan was cancelled was because he came across as too liberal. (Not joking.) He alienated the older audience. Colbert is clearly trying to not do the same. What with Jeb being his first guest.. but also having the others along, as well as lambasting Trump daily.

He's trying to feel out the new position. I'm not sure that he's figured out who the new Colbert persona is yet.

What he can get away with at a (relatively) small organization at Comedy Central, will not fly with the big boys in charge of The Late Show. Real people in real numbers see this, so he's been told he was to toe the line.

The whole purpose of giving him the Late Show was to bring him to heel.
