Mind you, it won't change any of the "abortion is murdering poor helpless pre-born babies" minds, not at all.
And it won't change any of the patriarchal "wimmins is outta control and that's the root of everything wrong" minds.
But it takes away the "human shield" of the baby-killing assertions pretty effectively.
And it might-- just MIGHT-- make some fence-sitters of the "this isn't really the MOST important issue" variety land on the useful side of the fence, running.

From Wikipedia
Shakers were celibate; procreation was forbidden after they joined the society (except for women who were already pregnant at admission). Children were added to their communities through indenture, adoption, or conversion. Occasionally a foundling was anonymously left on a Shaker doorstep. They welcomed all, often taking in orphans and the homeless. For children, Shaker life was structured, safe and predictable, with no shortage of adults who cared about their young charges.

(1,699 posts)Anybody that is old enough to have been around pre-Roe v Wade knows this has always been the case. The original arguments against Roe and abortion mostly centered around something like 'Bad girls should not be able to get out of their immoral mistakes by getting an abortion they should have to become mothers as their punishment for having the temerity to have sex outside of marriage'. Once Roe v Wade was passed they realized that argument was not working so they started pushing the 'its a baby' argument. I guess they figured an emotional argument works better than a moral argument.

(5,106 posts)In fact, I'm a bit older than Miller (Infamous Sixties generation). A girl in my dorm came back from an illegal abortion and nearly bled to death (not an uncommon happening in my generation). She was a "slut," of course and it served her right, according to a couple of really "Christian" dorm mates. Not once was anything said about a "baby" being "murdered." That argument was never mentioned, or even considered in those days.

(22,666 posts)... "Sex for recreation, sex for mere pleasure" is just FINE with evangelicals and pro-lifers -- but ONLY WHEN MEN DO IT. When it became possible for women to do that, well all HELL broke loose. Because males are some kind of privileged and women aren't human anyway, they're just breeding cattle - incubators on the hoof for men to use as service units. This is the asshole attitude behind the fact that we typically blame victims for rape - telling them don't wear this and that, don't walk here or there, don't go here or there, don't drink, "what did YOU do to cause yourself to get raped?!", etc. etc. -- but they NEVER EVER TELL RAPISTS NOT TO RAPE PEOPLE -- absolutely ZERO education around that at all.
Rape is fine in our society, some of it is even legislated - REQUIRED. If you're a victim of it, well too-bad-so-sad, slut (and any unmarried women or any woman not under the control or ownership of a man or a male-controlled legal system or society is a SLUT - watch - that's now it works). And a married women who is raped is also a slut and will be deemed fully responsible for someone ELSE'S behavior. As if she had any control whatsoever over it. This is WHY I call them the American Taliban. They treat sexually abused/assaulted women (and children) the same as the Taliban does. Little difference. "Oh well they don't stone them to death!", you say. Well perhaps not literally -- but they do throw rocks at them in other ways -- so that argument is invalid. They're further abused by a legal system and society that largely sees men as poor little victims who just can't control themselves sexually. No one ever suggests that they grow up and take responsibility for their actions. Only women are expected to do that (and to take responsibility for the actions of the men too!)
Here's another part of the problem I have with these dipshit "pro-life/anti-abortion/anti-contraception" attitudes: If you REALLY want to stop people having "Sex for recreation, sex for mere pleasure" - then you had goddamn better be as hellbent on controlling the behavior of MEN TOO AND NOT JUST WOMEN. But notice we never hear a thing about that. We can't give free contraceptives to women but we can give free Viagra to men all over the place. No complaints about that from our Taliban rulers! How interesting. The double standard is appalling.
But it's all fucked-up anyway (pun intended) because trying to control the behavior of OTHER people (rather than yourself) is just NOT possible! You control your own damn behavior and let others worry about theirs. Because you CANNOT control theirs. That's why blaming rape victims for what someone ELSE (the rapist) did is utterly S T U P I D. And simultaneously, absolving men of any responsibility whatsoever for their own behavior is utterly STUPID.
And -- trying to control only HALF the people whom you want to stop doing a thing (ie: having "Sex for recreation, sex for mere pleasure" ) is even MORE stupid. Either everybody stops it - or nobody does - and that's because (duh) sex takes TWO people at least.
These dipshit attitudes from pro-life/anti-abortion/anti-contraception zealots are a goddamned STUPID sandwich with extra bullshit.
But the anti-abortionist/anti-birth control crowd says:
"We can't have these slutty women having sex without consequence!!!"
Well why the fuck NOT? MEN do it all the time! When are you going to start tying legislative strings to their testicles and penises? Eh?
Well of course you're NOT.
The bottom line is that "Gawd" designed HUMANS to have sex (If there is such an entity). They're designed to WANT to have it. And WOMEN. ARE. HUMAN. Well woops: since women are human therefore they're going to (want to) have sex. Married or not. Biology doesn't give a crap about your stupid legal institutions. It does what it's designed to do. And the lesser intelligent humans would do well to stop trying to prevent half the human race from BEING HUMAN and start living with the FACT that women have sex and much of the time they enjoy it and would like to sometimes do it without being punished for 9 months and 20 years, since our medical technology now allows this. And GOOD for the human race! Developing birth control/contraception was one of the wisest things it's ever done for itself.
As for trying to control only the penis-lacking population because we don't want them having sex for the pure enjoyment of it without consequence: Just STOP being STUPID. It's not going to happen because it can't. Women as humans -just like men - are designed to have sex (and to want to have it) and they have the capability now to have pleasurable sex when the hell they want without consequence and idiot evangelicals and RWingers are not going to change that. That toothpaste is just NOT going back into that tube.
Deal with the fact that it happens, that it is GOING TO HAPPEN and ensure women have proper healthcare for it. That INCLUDES contraceptives, abortion when needed, pre-and post-natal care. Treat women like the HUMANS they are and always will be.
If men got pregnant all these things would be readily available and FREE. If women started making laws controlling MEN'S bodies and what they can and cannot do with them, they'd raise HOLY HELL about how unfair that is. But we know how that goes, don't we? Pfft.
The double standards and lack of understanding / refusal to accept basic human nature (and that women are human) and basic human psychology and the penchant to to place all blame and responsibility for sex, sexual behavior and procreation on women is stupid and unworkable. It just IS and that is fact.

(5,106 posts)I'm sure it was purely practical and a defense for women. Fair or not, it was the woman who "got caught" in the aftermath of sex. No way around it and hard for a woman without a man to "protect" her and her children. Men got off scott free and no one could prove who the father was until very recently in human history. This could have given rise to a whole lot of social disorder, and so it was much easier to reign in the women (of course some "uncivilized" societies had different attitudes). Man-made morals and religions reinforced the tradition and women were made, more and more, to feel the responsibility, other than in the old rape/pillage situations.

Kinda like when Keven McCarthy bragged that the Benghazi hearings were all about crippling the Hillary campaign. Rightwingers have gotten so, so confident that they're finally getting sloppy -- which is where we catch them.
I've thought a lot about what sex is for human beings. Yes, of course pleasure -- but it's so much more. It's love, support, closeness, intimacy, caring, connection, tenderness, passion, sincerity, self-expression, devotion, commitment, admiration, joy, happiness, delight, celebration, and deep, deep sharing. And more. Sex can be sacred. (And, for some sick people, something entirely different.) It is part of being human. (And I do not by any means criticize those who have chosen celibacy. Being human is vast and varied and all life styles that do not harm others are valid. It's a personal choice.)
These people are not pro-life. They are anti-llife.

(56,828 posts)women must have sex with their husbands because it is required of them - after all, Mike Huckabee says that women should "graciously submit" to their husband's leadership. Pleasure is not part of that picture, unless you get excited by graciously submitting (like all women should!). Men, on the other hand, must be pleased during sex. And, if a man ever cheats on his wife, it's for two reasons: (1) his wife is not taking care of his sexual needs at home, like Pat Robertson says, and (2) the other woman is obviously a brazen homewrecking slut. It's never the man's fault.

It sickens me how sexual 'purity' is so important to evangelicals and other religious conservatives. Catholics claim Jesus' mother is The Perpetual Virgin, who remained a virgin before, during and after Jesus' birth. Jesus' siblings were actually his cousins because cousins were often as close as brothers and sister back then. Joseph and Mary never had marital relations. Or so they believe. But, I digress. Sexuality, however, is anathema to Christianity. At least, female sexuality. Doubtless, had this old prude lived in Old Testament times, her greatest pleasure would have been stoning adulteresses.

(631 posts)Because the Citizens for a Pro-Life Society is a Roman Catholic anti-choice group. But she is married with three kids. Surprising she didn't have more. Her thoughts reflect those if the Catholic Church: every act of sex must carry a chance of pregnancy. So, what did she do to keep the number so low? She was born in 1953. And she does have a PH.D., though. Not sure what to make of that. But her goal is clearly to impose her own religious beliefs on others. She probably believes everything the church tells her, Adam and Eve, the fig leafs, garden of Eden, and childbearing as "God's" punishment for Eve for her sin of tempting Adam, and of course, no sex just for pleasure.
She's very old fashioned. Her views were widely shared in 19th, and even early to mid-twentieth century. She never used her education to escape the religious cell she was confined to as a child. How sad! And now she seeks to imprison the minds of other women, so she won't feel alone. How typical! She obviously smart. What a waste that she doesn't use it to liberate other women instead of defending their subjugation by the very institution she serves.

I was a dupe. Im ready to admit it now.
The reality is that so-called pro-life movement is not about saving babies. Its about regulating sex. Thats why they oppose birth control. Thats why they want to ban abortion even though doing so will simply drive women to have dangerous back alley abortions. Thats why they want to penalize women who take public assistance and then dare to have sex, leaving an exemption for those who become pregnant from rape. Its not about babies. If it were about babies, they would be making access to birth control widespread and free and creating a comprehensive social safety net so that no woman finds herself with a pregnancy she cant afford. They would be raising money for research on why half of all zygotes fail to implant and working to prevent miscarriages. Its not about babies. Its about controlling women. Its about making sure they have consequences for having unapproved sex.
But I am very sure that there are other dupes out there. If youre sitting there reading this thinking but I really am in it to save unborn babies, I am sure youre not alone. After all, I was one of you.
If you are one who has been a part of the pro-life movement because you really do believe in saving unborn babies, its time to cut your ties with the movement. You may be an honest and kind-hearted person, but youve been had. Youve been taken in. Its time to let go. Its time to support Obamacares birth control mandate, its time to call off opposition to birth control, and its time to get behind progressive programs that help provide for poor women and their children. Its time to make your actions consistent with your motives. While I am myself no longer morally opposed to abortion, I and others like me share your desire to decrease the number of unplanned pregnancies and to ensure that every woman can afford the option of keeping her pregnancy.

And keep it all on the inside.
Mary you're nearly a treat,
Mary you're nearly a treat
But you're really a cry.

When Lily would dress up all prim and proper and then drink tea from a tea cup, complete with saucer, of course.
And then she would always make the remark "Oh, how tacky!" about another comment made at the party the Laugh-in crew was having on their set.
My gawd, what's this world coming to, sex for mere pleasure!?!
I suppose this is going to bring an end to all political conventions, huh?

(4,490 posts)In church I was taught, sex outside of marriage was bad, masturbation was always bad, sex for pleasure while married was generally accepted though I feel like some questioned whether that was ok too. My memory on that is vague.

(3,568 posts)but it is real. This is something Dana Carvey's Church Lady would come up with.
For pleasure? For nothing else but MERE PLEASURE!? Oh no, THAT is most definitely not allowed. That is way, way, out of bounds, and should only be attempted when supervised and absolutely necessary with both parties blindfolded, silent, and holding their hands above their heads. Appropriate penance, of course, would begin immediately afterward.

(1 post)So if I am understanding this correctly, women are simply toys for men, to be played with at their discretion. Obviously Monica Miller has not done very much research about what happens when women are allowed to be treated as equal members of society. It kind of blows her case out of the water. There are areas of this world in which both men and women are treated as complete equals, despite incredible impoverished conditions. They are educated together, they share decisions and they the share the same types of work. Because of this empowerment, not only are both the men and women happier, they enjoy SMALLER family sizes due to women being allowed to have empowerment over HER body. Women in those societies are seen as people, and not baby factories.

(29 posts)Or does she, like seriously, need to get laid for fucks sake? Admittedly I'm no expert, but in my experience fucking is pretty fucking fun. So much so, I do as much of it as I can. With my wife, with our friends, watching my wife with our friends.......... The puritan, shame filled version of the joyous activity that we call sex is offensive. Sex is allowed. I can't help you if you're afraid to fuck and cum, but keep your insecure, neurotic proclivities to yourself. Sexual pleasure and the act of seeking it out is part of the process that keeps the species going. If getting your ass pounded till you're wet and quivering doesn't sound like a great idea and rather you liken it to the necessary, if un-enjoyable task of unclogging a toilet then you are an enormously sad person.

(14,558 posts)the rest of us. We've got to stop being so hung up about sex, and we've got to stop being so misogynistic in our policy choices. Planned Parenthood is fine. They help thousands of people.
Leave them alone.
