Related: About this forumThe remarkably stupid unintended consequences of our "War on Dandruff, uh, I mean, TERROR"
This may be a dupe, but the stats on this are remarkable in terms of unnecessary human suffering and wasteful military spending in the TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS. Plus we are planting the seeds of hatred that will terrorize all of us for generations to come!
Hey, America! Hows that WAR ON TERROR working out for you? Some profound info from this video link:
The war on terror has brought us more war and more terror.
Ted Cruz: The Middle East was better off with Saddam Hussein and Muammar Gaddafi in power.
In Pakistan there was one suicide attack in the fourteen years prior to 9-11. There have been 486 suicide attacks there since 9-11.
Fourteen years after the War on Terror was started the U.S.A. has spent SIX TRILLION DOLLARS ($6,000,000,000,000) on the Iraq and Afghanistan Invasions alone! This is $75,000 per American household.
According to reports from our own government, deaths from terrorism have increased 1,400% between 2002 and 2014.
Suicide attacks in Iraq before the invasion: NONE.
Since the 2003 invasion: 1,892.
Christians in Iraq before 2003 Invasion: 1.5 million.
After invasion: one million fled to a hard life in Syria. The remaining half million Christians are now being exterminated by groups like ISIS.
My conclusion:
The WAR ON TERROR is a war against a concept, not an army, militia, nation state, or any organized group of people. And based on the above stats, we are really really loosing this W.O.T. Its almost as if THE POWERS THAT BE are conducting themselves in a way to insure PERPETUAL TERRORISM and the more we try to bomb terrorism back to the Stone Age, the more people at the receiving end of our W.O.T. will become terrorists. America has created a blow back factory that, from a distance, looks like JOB ONE is perpetual war! So the w.o.t. appears to be extremely stupid and counterproductive, unless youre a fan of perpetual war. And I propose that our totally berserk MILITARY-INDUSTRIAL-CONGRESSIONAL- SURVEILLANCE-COMPLEX has very very strong incentives to keep war going as if their very existence and six, seven, eight, and perhaps even nine figure salaries depended on it.
Now, watch this drive.

"The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives." - Hunter Thompson, September 12, 2001

(3,343 posts)while it's absolutely true that the US should not have propped up so many dictators in the ME for decades, and while that support, and support from other Western nations, created the environment which lead directly the the Arab Spring etc., and while supporting human rights should be something we as a nation do there is a larger truth:
We as a nation are waaay to dishonest, self-serving and - frankly - criminal to be trusted with nation building or policing. The Invasion of Iraq was typical behaviour, not an exception.
Because we can't be trusted, and because the people making decisions for all of us, have endless ulterior motives, we should as a RULE, as DEFAULT BEHAVIOUR resist any attempt to be led into military conflict.
We are untrustworthy. And we cause more harm than good around the world.
The illustrations listed in the OP are just the tip of the iceberg or the chaos and destruction we've caused worldwide over the last 15 years. And continue to cause.

(19,326 posts)I've never understood why 'terrorism' has to be seen in terns of having a military adversary, when
(at least originally) this was about crimes of random mass murders motivated by a twisted fringe
ideological and "spiritual" worldview, just like the Oklahoma bombing was, but by a white guy. There
are international LE agencies to deal with international criminal behavior, to investigate and track
down and prosecute the perps.
Yet after 911 we couldn't' move fast enough to militarily invade two sovereign nations, one of
which had NOTHING whatsoever to do with 911. And now the rest is history, history that cannot
be undone.
So your points are well taken. Rather than exponentially creating MORE terrorism by reflexively reacting
militarily, we need some other way to frame what we call 'terrorism' that more accurately reflects what
we're actually dealing with and which points us towards actions that actually address the root causes ..
i.e. why so many people are so pissed-off at America and Western Civilization in general that they resort
to such murderous self-destructive extremism.
