As promised, Arcade Fire and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band paid tribute to David Bowie Saturday with a traditional second line parade through the streets of New Orleans' French Quarter. Frontman Win Butler, red megaphone in hand, led hundreds of Bowie fans in a sing-along of a handful of the rock legend's classics, including "Heroes," "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "Suffragette City."
The band asked fans to dress in their "best Bowie outfit or something more strange," and even Butler took part in the festivities with some Aladdin Sane-inspired face paint and a bright pink jacket. Hundreds of fans gathered at New Orleans' St. Peter Street, the second line's starting point, and packed Big Easy streets until reaching its destination, the One Eyed Jacks nightclub, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
"David Bowie was one of the band's earliest supporters and champions," the Arcade Fire said in a statement following Bowie's passing. "He not only created the world that made it possible for our band to exist, he welcomed us into it with grace and warmth. We will take to the grave the moments we shared; talking, playing music and collaborating as some of the most profound and memorable moments of our lives. A true artist even in his passing, the world is more bright and mysterious because of him, and we will continue to shout prayers into the atmosphere he created."
