Ben Ginsberg, Republican attorney, explains the process that would be required for delegates at the Republican convention to select someone other than the party front-runner (Donald Trump).

The interesting thing to me is the ability of delegates, 70% selected at the state GOP party level, to outright choose the Vice President for the party, even if the nominee has one in mind. Also Ginsberg discusses how these puppeted 70% of delegates at the outset can vote for rules issues, credentials challenges, and again, the Vice Presidential nominee, or even the convention Chair.
I'm wondering if they simply choose a VP they want to insert on the ticket, (let's say Kasich for argument's sake) then let Trump run the race, and if he wins, the first act of Congress is to impeach the President, get 2/3's of the Senate to go along (D's and R's), and then move the V.P. into his place, and then Ryan, the Speaker of the House, moves up to become VP.
Is this something that is impossible? I may be overlooking an obvious thing here, but the GOP appears to be doing anything in their power to take him down and it would seem if they do it prior to the election, they'll anger enough voters to lose the election regardless of who they stick in his place.

Another option with the same Trump-impeachment scenario would be to place a VP on Trump's ticket pre-destined to resign after Trump leaves, and then Paul Ryan moves directly into the Presidency.... The GOP establishment is losing their grip on the country and this may be their last chance to exert control over what happens before the demographics entirely wipe them off the map

If anyone thinks Trump is an impossibility, just look at what Republican action-hero doll Arnold Schwarzenegger did to heavily Democratic California -- no experience, just name-recognition, and walked right into the job. A total embarrassment.

Given the outcome of the 2000 election debacle, anything is possible with these people.

(22,109 posts)What are the credentials needed to run as a Republican candidate? I've had a look and it seems there aren't any, apart from having enough money to run the campaign. It's incredible that it has to get to such a late stage before a candidate's credentials (whatever they are) are challenged.
