UBER: Ticketed by Port Authority Police for Not Having Municipal Permit

Published on Mar 3, 2016

On March 2nd, Weds, at around 6:30pm I was ticketed by the Port Authority Police at Newark Airport in New Jersey while picking up an Uber passenger. I do have NYC TLC plates and FHV Dispatch License. I did pick up right in front of the police multiple times prior to this incident and did not get ticketed in my TLC plated vehicle. TLC stands for Taxi and Limousine Commission in New York City. In fact, the night before I had made 3 pickups from Newark Airport right in front of these same police officers without incident or warning. It was obvious then that I was picking up an Uber passenger. I do have the lighted Uber sign on my front window and the officers had seen this the night before. They did not do anything until today.

My understanding prior to this incident was that NYC TLC plated vehicles and FHV drivers could make legal pickups at the Newark Airport. I had been making pickups at the airport since I was first licensed back in December and have made dozens of pickups right in front of the police with my lighted Uber sign. The police had ignored me until today.

Apparently, Newark City politics have caught up to the Newark Airport. Newark City wants their aging yellow taxi fleet to service the airport. The yellow taxi vehicles at the airport, composed of de-commissioned police cars that are no longer manufactured, are owned by independent owner/operators who pay 600 grand for a permit/medallion to operate at the airport. Owners rent out the permits at $1000 per week to drivers.

I've used Uber over 100 times in the past year here in Albuquerque, NM.
But I have a question for you:
Does your NY plate and license permit you to legally pick up at the NJ airport?

I know you say you've done it before, but .........?

Many airports, such as Newark and Detroit, have required special permits for airport pickups.

If the authorities are going to keep hands off on rideshare, they need to deregulate the taxi and sedan industries so that they can compete on a level field.

If EVERYONE does not have to pay to play, then NO ONE should.

No more bond plates (aka medallions). No more commercial plates and insurance. No more local driver permits. No more fare restrictions.

Safety tip: whether riding in Uber, Lyft, or marked taxis - ALWAYS take a pic of the car you will be riding in, as well with the driver. Text this, along with your itinerary and the license plate of the car, to a friend. Also, with Uber, make sure the car you are getting in is the same as what is on the app, and the driver is the one pictured. Especially in hot spots, there are fake Uber drivers picking people up.

The daughter of director and actor Kevin Smith told ABC News how she was nearly abducted by two men posing as drivers for ride-sharing service Uber.

Harley Quinn Smith, 16, says she ordered an Uber car last week to pick her up at a Starbucks in the Los Angeles area. When the car arrived, Harley, an actress, said she knew something was suspicious.

“The second I started talking to them, I realized they were definitely not Uber drivers," she said. "They had just printed out the Uber symbol and put it at the front of their car."

“It was very, very scary,” Harley added.
