(1,825 posts)When encountering the video, I thought that the ostrich would be able to keep up, but not for nearly so long.

(22,669 posts)Thank goodness he bit my arm and not taken one of my eyes out. They're aggressive and mean. I wouldn't want to be near one on foot. Those cyclists are smart to keep peddling. I would.

(1,254 posts)The local paper would print out a weekly report on calls received by the police of the town of Sonoma. One report received was a call to rescue a bicyclist trapped under his bike by a cow. The young man had stopped at a RR crossing where he encountered a cow that had escaped from a nearby pasture. The cow did not take a liking to the young man and the man tried to put the bike between himself as a barrier and he got knocked over, the cow was standing on the bike not allowing the bicyclist to escape. One year while vacationing on the coast of Oregon we encountered a Brahma bull standing in the middle of the road. There were farms and pastures in the area. We SLOWLY drove around the bull so as not to alarm or provoke it. We managed to drive on and around the bend of the road, less than a mile we encountered a bicyclist. We stopped to warn him about the danger ahead if he continued. As we drove off, we watched him continue on. What happened after that I often wonder.

I'm guessing, but that was probably in the Karoo, in South Africa.

(1,668 posts)Canada Geese nest alongside a bike trail I ride to work. Trust me birds can be aggressive and I had one strike and one near miss. I'm thinking this bird could barge a rider off.

(1,825 posts)my place of employment. It too often features Canada Geese nearby (indeed, so close you could almost touch them if they would let you). I find that if you merely slow down when traveling, they give you no problems. They have never given me any problem.

(60,071 posts)I came across a big ole Emu one day about 10 yrs ago driving to work, damn thing jumped in the middle of the road between me and a big rig coiming the other way. We both locked up our brakes and the thing took off running like just that that ostrich did, we both just stopped and looked in amasement.I swear its legs looked like that of a basketball player. Apparently they were a high dollar farm animal around here in Texas years ago and when the prices went down people just let them go free.
A big ole buddy of mine came across the same one apparently one day and decided to capture it by wrestlling with it with his bare hands. He said he got it in the back of hsi pickup with one helluva fight but right when he did the thing rared back to peck him and wound up knocking itself out on his rear window. He was a big ole boy but said the thing damn near kicked his butt! He wound up taking it home and caging it as a pet for a few months until it jumped the fence (or someone left it open) and it and ran away! LOL!

(36,261 posts)... and the legs are very strong. Domesticated emus can appear quite tame but if one gets pissed off they can be very dangerous.
