(2,054 posts)is that this whole debate wouldn't have even been necessary if we had worked assiduously to combat environmental pollution way back in the 70's, when the first Earth Day was inaugurated. Back then, the whole debate was framed in terms of the healthfulness and beauty / purity of the environment. But sadly, these health, ecological and purity concerns were not enough to really motivate modern man to get off his @$$ and do something about the problem. Now, environmental activists, failing to get an adequate response from the public, and from the governmental authorities in charge, on these relatively minor, but still significant motivators, have had to result to much more severe threats and motivators to try to get these authorities to do something about our huge environmental problems. They have had to frame things in life or death terms, like putting a gun to someone's head, hoping beyond hope that somehow, this time, those in charge will respond. But judging from the poor response to even this level of threat and urgency, and the widespread denial that is going on, it seems like those in charge are saying, "OK, what the heck - pull the trigger!"
