Mike Malloy - Trump's Race Comments Splinter GOP
Republican leaders were compelled to denounce Donald Trumps rhetoric on race Tuesday as worries about losing House and Senate seats grew, thanks to their presumptive nominees inflammatory remarks.
enate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell repeated his personal objections to Trumps critiques of Judge Gonzalo Curiel of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, but declined to comment on the implications. McConnell and his GOP colleagues worry that Trump will drive up voter turnout for Democratic candidates this fall, which could topple enough Republicans to flip the Senate to Democratic control in January.
"My advice to our nominee would be to start talking about the issues that the American people care about, and to start doing it now, McConnell said. It's time to quit attacking various people that you competed with, or various minority groups in the country, and get on message. He has an opportunity to do that. This election is eminently winnable. The American people, at their core, do not want four more years like the last eight.
