The dungeon master rolls the dice and determines the outcomes. Choose door #1. Let's see what's behind it. Rolls dice with no idea of what's behind it.

(Not exactly like "Let's Make a Deal" but we nevertheless called it Monty Hall.)

The best D&D ever.

But that was what made it so much fun. (Unless your character died... Sometimes the dice rolls just don't go your way. However, you often managed to be resurrected. It's no fun being excluded from the game. However, one had damned well either have lots of gold, or many devoted friends. Just my recommendation if one ever gets into a Monty Hall D&D game.)

Most notorious was the McMartin preschool "Satanic Panic," where a schizophrenic woman accused teachers of being in on a "Satanic plot."

The trial was a fiasco, ruining many lives.

I began playing EverQuest in 2000. I still play today although not as intense as involved as I once was .
The game provided the name, Biden, to my character, long before I was aware of a Joe Biden. I'm proud to still play him.
For me it was an escape when I started. I was going through some personal struggles in my life, and it allowed me to leave the pain and escape into another world where I could concentrate on other more positive events with friends I had made from around the world in real life. After some years I drove across the United States and personally met a lot of those friends in Denver Phoenix Atlanta, Newport News and other cities around the country. All very good people in real life.
Three of my four children still play D&D from time to time and even my grandsons will get together and play with each other occasionally .
Just another bogeyman for the crazies in the institutional religions across the land . They are the real bogeyman, not Dungeons & Dragons .

... where do you see the parallels to today? (I'd love to see if I'm missing some!)

Seconded by 'everything' that is threatening Christianity and God, pick a subject - Homosexuals (Much love 4 u peeps!), Marriage, Obama, porn and even the Internet itself.

If you ask me, the real reason is that people are moving on from archaic thinking because of technology, knowledge and information. On that note, I think it is very likely that the Internet is to blame for 'Killing Religion' - as an Atheist, sounds good to me.

Scapegoats! They never get old!

EDIT:

The other thing that is really big right now is politicians scapegoating a subject, missing the real problems. I know that's a big vague, however, relevant. Climate Change, law enforcement, etc.

How many non-TGs have TGs killed with assault rifles in restrooms? Less than 49?
