I have a cousin who is Mexican of Belgian descent. Petite, blond, blue eyed, and beautiful. Forgot to mention, she also happens to be an industrial engineer working in the automotive industry in Detroit. After her divorce she was back in the dating scene and went on a blind date with an Indian guy. A physician. During dinner he happened to mention how irritating it was for him that people would talk to him in Spanish, assuming that he was a Mexican. Can't they tell the difference between Indians and Mexicans? My cousin was deeply offended by this and told him: "What's wrong with people thinking you are Mexican? I am Mexican". To which he replied: "Yes, but you don't look like one."

Big mistake.

My cousin got up from the table and told him: "You should feel proud that people might think you are Mexican".

Then she stormed off.

I had these kind of conversations countless times with people who don't even mean any harm. When asked where I'm from, I got used to reply right away with 'I was born in (city of this country).' And still, almost every time and despite not having any accent, I get this 'Yeah ok, but before that' response. Another silly variant: 'I don't get it. How can a Chinese have a (european nationality) name.' Needless to say, my roots are also not Chinese.

This is why the reasoning behind Kirk's stupid remark against Tammy Duckworth feels very familiar for some of us and we know how it feels like to be in such a situation.

They don't know what kind of people are US citizens who vote.

It's what we do though. Imagine being Hispanic. Automatically you start out as an illegal immigrant, and then you graduate to being "legal"...but you are ALWAYS "from somewhere below the Rio Grande".

Welcome to America. Late of the narrow minded racists.
