The US-Mexican border stretches almost 2000 miles from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf. Building a secure wall along this border would likely be the single most energetic project ever attempted by humans since the beginning of mankind.
The Panama Canal is a ditch by comparison and the Moon landing is like shooting backyard fireworks when it comes to national treasure. The cost, with Trump's sensors "above and below the wall", would certainly bankrupt the country faster than a Trump casino.
Watch this quick video tour of that border and wonder if Trump is really so absolutely stupid that he thinks he can build the wall, or if he just hopes the voters are. I think I know.

(2,322 posts)...I wouldn't be surprised if he did believe he could do it. He's not smart and never thinks anything through.
In the end, however, what matters isn't whether he can really do it or not. All that matters is that he said what people wanted to hear. "I will put an end to non-white-foreigners coming in illegally and putting your way of life at risk." This is what his base wants to hear it. They want to hear it said forcefully. They want to hear it from someone who sounds as angry as they are. They want to hear it from someone who sounds like he'll fight. And they want to hear it said simply, not with any indication that it could be complicated and therefore not done.
That's what "build a wall" means to them. It's three words that says all that.

(2,062 posts)I kept following the video in shocked disbelief, wondering to myself, "When the heck is the Gulf of Mexico finally going to come??? What really surprised me was how incredibly tortuously the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo del Norte to Mexicans) twists and turns. It made me curious to look on my road atlas of Mexico to see if the Rio Grande really twists and turns like that, almost doubling back on itself in many places.
Frankly, my very first reaction when Trump made that "build a wall" declaration in his first campaign speech was, "Are you crazy? Out of all the things this country needs, you think the single most important thing is to build a f-ing wall???" My second thought was, "Have you really been down to the border and crossed the border like I have? What they got up there now may not be a brick wall, but it's pretty darn strong and impenetrable as it is, Mr. Trump."
But then I came to understand that Trump's "build a wall" declaration was not really to be taken literally, and he would probably not follow through on that campaign promise - nor would his ardent supporters really hold him to it. What that "build a wall" declaration really was was a kind of dog whistle - not so subtle, I might add - to gather his racist base around him. And so, the very foundation or bedrock of his presidential campaign is racism and xenophobia - of blaming "the other" for all of America's problems. Bernie had Trump's racism and xenophobia pretty well figured out when he said that it's always easier to blame things on those _____________ than to do some real soul searching or in depth analysis to get to the root of our problems as a nation.
