Lincoln spoke in platitudes about freedom and opportunity. Common folk
thought that meant free land and westward expansion, and it did. But
Lincoln's railroad cronies (he was a railroad lawyer) and northern manufacturers
heard license to exploit labor without government interference and high
tariffs on foreign goods to protect domestic industries. That all sounds
patriotic an innocuous enough, but it's the same old GOP agenda: inside
deals hammered out privy from public view between wealthy business and
political leaders: cronyism.
