(5,399 posts)Welcome to neoliberal capitalism run wild.
We are better than this. As HUMAN BEINGS, we are better than this. We are bodies and souls and memories and experiences. We are NOT what we buy, what we consume, what we tweet (god, how I hate that human discourse is being truncated into 140 characters), what we watch, what we own. Capitalism has trivialized all of life in the so-called modern world and has left us all infinitely poorer in the things that really matter.
Olbermann truly is the voice crying out in the wilderness...

(1,408 posts)It's those few soulless bastards that have no honor or empathy for others and if they have the money, position and power, and given the chance, they will muck it up for the rest of us.

(3,847 posts)are right. But they have installed those that will destroy any kind of critical thinking in public schools. These prostitutes will begin and have been dismantling school boards that have the say in state and country curriculum.
Now we have a third of the country with a 8th grade level of understanding.

(22,976 posts)Unless Citizens United ever gets overturned, Americans are pretty much screwed in perpetuity. And with a conservative SCOTUS looming, nothing will change until the makeup of the court changes, which could be decades.
I've always liked and admired Keith's intellect and dark humor. He was a sports reporter for KTLA in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, which is where I first got hooked.

(54,302 posts)Never mind that 60% of them will have no idea whatsoever what Olbermann is talking about. Some of them will get it eventually. Some of them will get it sooner than they ever will have wanted to. We got it seven years ago, but we have no say in the matter any more. The last election proved that right just as it proved Olbermann's uncannily accurate prediction from seven years ago right.

(10,418 posts)You're right, I think. Most people won't understand what Keith was talking about. Authenticity and the truth are becoming much rarer in America. If you speak in those terms, a lot of people here won't know what you are talking about. American society is becoming psychotic if you define psychotic as being detached from reality. People here are losing touch with what is really happening in the world.
I know you live in Germany and travel around the world and sometimes make it here to the states. I'm guessing that the people you talk to when you are here, the people you do business with, aren't average Joes. I'm a trucker and I talk to average Joes all the time. Most of them don't really know what's happening to our country. Right wing media has somehow convinced most truckers that their interests lie with the Republicans. It used to be that the majority of truckers were strongly represented by the Teamsters Union. Very few trucking companies have organized labor now. It will probably soon be totally a thing of the past. It is painful to hear a man who should be a Democrat, if not a socialist, singing the praises of a guy like Trump. Many people here simply do not know who best represents their interests.

(10,418 posts)There is a wealthy man who owns a pillow factory and who is also a liberal. I've seen his TED talk videos posted here. I can't remember his name. He is of the opinion that if you don't treat workers fairly they are eventually going to come for you, meaning the rich people. Paying his workers a fair wage and benefits package is simply good business in his view.
Unfortunately, he is in a very small minority. Those who run the corporations probably should heed his warning...though, I doubt they will.

(1,408 posts)He essentially says that 'if people have money, they'll spend money.
"People" being 'the dirty unwashed' that should be kissing the feet of the rich for providing scraps for 'the dirty unwashed' to exist(barely) on.
Not that the "piss down" theory hasn't been working for the damned reTHUGliCONS/GOP for the past 3-4 decades at the expense of the rest of the country.

"In May 2012, several online news outlets reported that Hanauer's March 1, 2012, TED talk on inequality had not been posted online by TED Talks.[12][13][14][15] In that short presentation he critiqued what he called "an article of faith for Republicans:" the assertion that "if taxes on the rich go up, job creation will go down." Businesses and the rich do not create jobs, he said. Jobs are created by a feedback loop between customers and businesses that is set in motion by consumers increasing their demand. Thus he proposed the necessity for higher median incomes for workers rather than tax breaks for the wealthy, stating that if lower income tax rates for the wealthy really worked "we would be drowning in jobs, and yet unemployment and underemployment is at record highs."
>snip<
As justification for not posting the talk, Chris Anderson, curator of TED, stated that he felt Hanauer's talk was "explicitly partisan" and included a number of unconvincing arguments such as his "apparent ruling out of entreprenurial initiative as a root cause of job creation." Moreover, he said, the live TED audience had given the talk mediocre reviews.[17] Huffington Post writer Jillian Berman expressed bewilderment since TED had previously issued talks by politicians such as former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore or British Prime Minister David Cameron without hesitation.[14] TED reserves the right to post only the talks it considers to be most effective. Hanauer partially defended Anderson's decision in an interview with Sam Seder, saying he could understand that the position he himself offered in his talk might be controversial to the business community and that Anderson might have received disproportionate criticism for his decision to hold back the talk.[18] The original presentation is available on YouTube."

(1,408 posts)My thought are that's what the rethugs have been pushing for so long and how's that working out for us?
His ideas of higher wages equals more money in the economy just seems to be common sense.
Unfortunately, common sense seems to be in short supply for most of the right.

Because we can't handle the truth!

We have a few that go after the truth but for the most part it seems that many of our reps have a problem.

(10,494 posts)country since I joined DU. That is the ability to legally bribe our politicians. This has been my main issue here and I have sometimes forced this discussion in posts where there was another topic altogether. The reason is that the money in our politics affects almost every issue we have today!
I applaud Keith for this and what he is trying to do now. My only quibble with what he said was that when he said this almost all of our politicians were already bought off. The Citizen United decision just made it harder for a populist movement to gain traction against a bigger tidal wave of money.
I believe that all of the various political groups advocating for things like Climate Change, LGBT rights, women's rights, immigration, Wall Street/economic reform, BLM... join together to focus on this one issue! Each one of the issues I just listed and many, many more will not get satisfactorily addressed until and unless we outlaw campaign contributions! No more revolving door, no more Special Interests/Lobbyists!

(8,280 posts)we must end Citizen's United and make it a constitutional amendment. Seriously.
How can we get them to do it?

(9,350 posts)I have not lost hope. I still believe the American people can turn this thing around. We the American people can stop Donald Trump and those like him. We have done it before. Even if Donald Trump get his entire cabinet he can be stopped. The rest of us have almost two years to organize, put forward candidates, and vote. If enough people vote in 2018 we can turn things around.
The Democratic Party needs to take these two years and organize its supporters. The party needs to go out and recruit people to run for office in 2018 and every future election. There needs to be a major effort made to train people (mainly in grassroots tactics) in all states and of all ages to become paid campaign staff.

GAWD, we've got work to do if we ever want to save the TRUE USA - and it will start with making sure the thieves/corporations are voted out - we must GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!!
