We have the technology to fake entire interviews:

German scientists have developed a program that can overlay a new mimic on an existing face. In real-time. All they need is video of you doing a wide range of facial expressions.
0:45 for a fake George W. Bush
1:50 for a fake Putin, 2:40 for a close-up
3:20 for a fake Trump, 3:50 for a close-up
4:20 for a fake Obama (bottom image)

There are still weaknesses.
Imitating Putin is hard, because he never smiles.
And as 6:20 shows, a girl with a roundish face and broad smile cannot really force a convincing mimic on a male with a long face.

Oh, and Adobe is working on a Photoshop for speech. "Adobe Voco" needs about 20 minutes of your voice and it can make you say anything.

It doesn't have to be a good video. Romney's 47%-video was blurry, but it was obviously his voice. DetlefK Feb 2017 #3
So, IF A MOVIE DIRECTOR wanted to bring back a "dead actor" for a major Motion picture yuiyoshida Feb 2017 #4
That actually sounds feasible. DetlefK Feb 2017 #5

The uncanny valley is too great an obstacle for convincing video in the short term. But audio is another story.

all they need do, is play a sample of speech for the device, and use a face re-inactment and bam! You could bring back, CLARK GABLE to do a GONE WITH THE WIND sequel. With Computer animation, as sophisticated as it is, its quite possible to do this. The only PROBLEM would be the Legal part.. getting Clark Gable's estate to allow the Studio to do this. If there is the possibility to make money at it, I am sure, fact or fiction, that A movie such as GONE WITH THE WIND II could be made.

Or how about this. Harrison Ford is quite old now. IF they wanted to make an animated version of BLADE RUNNER II, they could recreate Harrison Ford and only supply his voice to make the film.

I WAS very impressed how TOHO made Godzilla, and they made him so he was Realistic and believable. Think how Movies could change, if Actors of the past, who were lost in time, could be brought back for new films... as I said, the only real problem, is the legal side of it.

Scanning Clark Gable's face from all his movies... scanning his voice from all his movies...

Then you need an actor who already very much looks like him...

In post-production, the actor's face gets replaced with a CGI-version of Clark Gable's face... with the facial expressions done by a face-actor who very much looks like Clark Gable...

Hell, we could an older actor play a younger version of himself. The young CGI-face based on old footage and the old actor provides the face-acting for a second time in the post-production.
