Do we still teach Civics and American History in high school?

Back in the early 1960s when I was in high school I considered my civics class the most boring of all my classes. That was because for some foolish reason the class was held in the auditorium and the teacher was the gym instructor. All he did was stand at a podium and read the text book word for word. We were required to take notes and the quality of those notes counted as a portion of the grade.

I fell asleep more times in that class than I did in all my other classes totaled. Still I learned a fair amount about how our government is set up and should work. With a halfway decent instructor Civics might have been one of my favorite classes.

but in this case he is right to point out that many Americans don't know or don't care about important parts of our country's history.

I'm a big supporter of giving everyone the standard citizenship test in order to be allowed to vote in our national elections. I think a lot of Trumpsters will fail that test.

It's astounding that so many people are unaware of basic facts. Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel, I think, have asked simple questions of people on the street and the answers boggle the mind. Back in the day, they were stymied when they were asked who they voted for. If it wasn't for the scandals and controversy, many wouldn't know who was president now. And Trump is one of them!

I didn't know the year the Constitution was written (I was 2 years off which I don't think was a big deal).

It's a damn crying shame that there are so many people out there without even basic knowledge of how this country is supposed to work.

Trumptards would fail a citizenship exam, but with the decades long attack on public education, a lot of our people might fail too. I couldn't disagree with you more. Because someone is from a less than privileged background does not mean their vote should be taken away. We really must argue this point on this forum? I'm aghast.

And Mark Dice does NOT belong on DU. He is featured on Alex Jones shows all the time. Again, we really must argue this here on DU?

Question: Do they have a Fourth of July in England?
Answer: Yes, they also have a Third and Fifth of July.

I'm with you, George II. It's "Independence Day" and politically, it's the most important day of the year.

He's not going to show those. Also some people go blank when asked some out of context question by a stranger. If I run into someone I know, but in a place where I don't expect to see that person, sometimes I can't remember their name? But, there are a lot of low information people out there.

I always think these interviewer guys video tape a hundred folks
just to show the few idiots.

... an American video blogger, YouTube personality and author known for his conspiracy theories about secret societies such as
The Bilderberg Group, Bohemian Grove events, Satanists and the Illuminati control of the world.

In June 2008, Dice launched a campaign urging people to send letters and DVDs to troops stationed in Iraq,
which supported the theory that the September 11 attacks in 2001 were an "inside job".
