Boy, is that ever sorely needed right now! Sorting out the crap and the lies in the online info deluge, and separating the spurious and misleading arguments from those with sincerity and substance is what it's all about, as the Russian deluge of misinformation focused on defeating Hillary Clinton and electing Donald Trump amply demonstrates. I think that, in addition to the usual US history and civics courses taught in high school, another should be added: Introduction to Philosophy, Logic and Critical Thinking, to give young people the tools they need for properly assessing the arguments and promises of politicians running for high office. A good educational system that gives young people the tools they need for critical, independent thinking is the immune system of a democracy.

What passes for "news" right now is as depressing as it gets. Even those of us who follow the news pretty closely need to pay attention. And more history wouldn't hurt, as well. When I was in high school there was a year of World History, a year of American History - and I remember early on being expected to know who my senators were. The lack of basic knowledge we're dealing with today explains the mess we currently find ourselves in. How can anyone not know which "side" the nazis were on??
