I'm still VERY suspicious about why he retired so young, from such a critical medical specialty, and walked away completely. Most people with his touted skills would have at least done some consulting or teaching. It raises a lot of questions, in my mind.

Disclaimer: In my previous life, I investigated physician's credentials, for a living. Every 3 years I had to review and verify their license to practice, DEA, hospital affiliations, malpractice insurance coverage, and malpractice history. I know that neurosurgery is a specialty that gets hit with a lot of malpractice suits. They were some of the roughest for me to have to read.

...given the proclivities of insurance companies and their lawyers.

But googling Ben Carson and malpractice suggests he had about 6 to 8 claims filed, including one in which it is alleged he admitted to having left a sponge in.

As you mention, neurosurgery gets a lot of these claims, so whether his incidence was unusual I wouldn't know.

It might be interesting to look at the time that the last case settled, versus the time that he ceased to practice medicine.

Sometimes 400 per year. Two of the lawsuits involved him leaving items in the patient, which isn't surprising if he was rushing through the surgeries.

I'd love to know how many suits were filed, and how many were settled vs dismissed. It is too bad that they won't open the National Practitioner Data Bank for public viewing.

...is that it might show an unusual number of cases, etc..

However, it is readily observable that he quit doing it for politics, in which the standard of malpractice is getting lower all of the time.

I'm not sure whether Dr. C is dumb, or just perpetually sedated.
