The Framers were pretty focused on denying any one branch of government, particularly the executive branch, more power or leverage than the others. Having thrown off the yoke of King George III, they sure as heck didn't want an "imperial" president. So the idea that the president has "absolute immunity" and cannot be indicted are pretty ridiculous, since that in essence would put the president above the law.
