(39,343 posts)Everyone likes the trendy dancing but ignores the violence going down on the streets behind them.
There's tons of symbolism and references happening in the background of that video:
Death riding a Pale Horse with all of Hell behind him (or in this case, a police car).
Someone shooting up a black church (the choir in the second verse), remember South Carolina.
Lots more here. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2018/05/07/this-is-america-breaking-down-childish-gambinos-powerful-new-music-video/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.371514841706

(11,004 posts)I think it's also a way for the kids to escape from them.
Also, notice all the cars are late models with their drivers-side doors open, and their hazard lights on.
I've been focusing a lot on his facial expressions and some of the moves - I think they're some sort of nod back to minstrelsy, but I'm not sure.

Urge For Going
(18 posts)i'm so stuck on this... i've been waiting for pop culture to start protesting. its the best way to wake up the millenials, and the ones who are in post secondary. look at all the views.. non-political people are discussing it... wow, eh?
protest songs had such a big impact in the '60s, and the music of a huge movement of peaceful people demanding social changes.. i've been waiting for a long time to see a similar movement pop up -- a bigger movement.. this is a good start. this is a hella viral video, so its made its rounds to most people under 30 for sure.
need more genuine protest songs. I really think its totally needed.. our society is so connected to pop culture and social media... you would think that artists who truly care about the state of the US and her democracy would create music to wake people up.. and use social media to spread it........just not that bandwagon bullshit that bands like nickelback produce. *barf*
young people are overworked, paid like shit, and they are complacent about it. they are scraping by enough to pay bills, buy weed, a couple cool tops, and eat ramen noodles and on-the-go meals. they won't pay attention to issues until it affects them directly. they are very distracted. soooooo distracted.
