2. Thanks ! Sadly Mattie is what some in rural Ireland elect, and he isn't the worst of this type of

chancer. Have a quick look at these two brothers from County Kerry, who were also elected to the Irish Parliament - Michael and Danny Healy Rae. A change of accent and they'd fit into Alabama politics without a problem. Michael Healy Rae is the second richest in Parliament, with 5.4m. The No 1 richest, Michael Lowry also represents a rural district and has been in all sorts of scandals over the years.

Here's Michael Healy Rae (with his flat cap schtick - bald !)

And his neanderthal brother, Danny

embarrassingly he got on BBC tv

This is their late father Jackie Healy Rae

3. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for them.

35 years since the last vote...maybe times are changing.

4. It's looking good based on anecdotal evidence. In Dublin it appears to be

up at Marriage Equality voting levels. There has to be a big win in Dublin to offset the rural areas...a bit like Pennsylvania.

7. Thanks for posting these clips!

Very interesting, although the last one was really working on my nerves. I think it's going to pass and I hope so. I am so tired of these religious reactionaries trying to foist their narrow minded beliefs on the rest of us.

10. The Healy Raes are opportunists. But even in South Kerry it looks like the vote there is about 58-42

You should do a Google Streetview of Kilgarvan, County Kerry, where the Healy Raes own half the village.

11. Looked them up. It says they are "Gombeens". The countryside looks very beautiful, it's

a shame they are so backward.

12. Gombeenism is their profession ! That said you go to Alabama or

West Virginia and you'll probably see similar gombeenism.

8. The pro-choice campaign has essentially won!!!

Irish anti-abortion campaign concedes it has lost referendum.

Exit polls suggest majority of voters favour repealing 8th Amendment of constitution

9. Not just won, but obliterated the No vote campaign, and the Catholic Church's control.
