(4,533 posts)The war was allegedly based on defector reports, blared on Page 1 of NYT articles by Judith Miller.
The CIA used the UN inspectors to test the veracity of many such reports. There were roughly 100 inspections. Not a single one verified the report. That is why I never believed that it was an honest mistake by the CIA.

(1,800 posts)It was so easy to know the truth at the time and yet my stupid Republican sister still thinks there were WMD. She still watches Fox all day and hangs on their every word. It makes me sick!

(7,875 posts)Powell was a loyal, old school republican at the time who was lead to believe what was necessary to do and say. He was not in charge of the information stream that lead to his remarks.

(37,648 posts)Powell held up a tube showing a tiny amount of a substance & explained what it could do, and that there was evidence that Saddam Hussein had gassed his people and didn't get rid of the remainder, etc., etc.
Colin Powell addressed this in an interview later, saying that all the public was told was what he was told, too. His expression and tone were not pleased. I totally believed him.
They needed someone like Powell to push their story. Powell had military cred and an impeccable reputation as an honest, ethical person.

(16,843 posts)like he was not responsible for his actions at the time because he was lied to. I knew it was all lies and so did millions of others. There were massive protests all over the world, which were largely ignored by media. How could the PM of one of the world's most powerful countries not know it was bullshit? He had to have known, and he is being disingenuous.

(10,095 posts)I will never ever forget those evil fucks that got us into that god awful war. Yet, we have a Cheney in Congress, and so many others from the putrid administration are called upon by the corporate media to comment on current events.
If you forgot about it haven't seen it, find the remote Meet the Press interview between Powell and Russert where one of Powell's lackeys tries to cut the camera when Powell was being questioned.

(37,648 posts)you don't go to war over the mere possibility of something, esp when you're starting a war against terrorism at the same time.
They also pushed the "Iraq has terrorists" meme, which the stupid ones fell for, too. But others advised the public that it was just the opposite: Saddam Hussein not only didn't have terrorists; he kept terrorists at bay and kept them from spreading as much in the region. (Saddam Hussein was brutual. I shudder to think what he did when he caught terrorists in his country. He was evil, by all accounts.)

(9,865 posts)...anti-invasion marches in the streets across the country on the eve of war---and the media hardly reported on them. Not to mention Judith Miller's lies in the NYT's where she took "dictation" from the White House.
That war was as harmful to the world as it gets. With no accountability since. It's truly tragic. And George sits in his bathrub and paints.
