3. Having grown up in the 50's I view John Wayne as someone that was mainstream of that era.

Civil rights was finally being addressed. The WASP culture had little or no regard for the plight of native Americans, and any talk of gays was definitely not something that was discussed in public. I don't think Wayne was much different than most white Americans of those days. White privilege and supremacy were in their "heyday" in those times.

For me it just shows how far we have come since those days and really how far we have to go. I was never a big John Wayne fan but I think the generation before me "the greatest generation" were his biggest fans. Maybe it gives a little more insight into that generation?

Should they rename the airport - That would be up to the people of Orange County.

I've known that John Wayne was a member of the John Birch society since I was a kid. As sad as it may be, people tolerated them a lot more back then than they do today. Look forward.
