They are indeed good at coercion - made all the easier by the mob mentality among many of their voters.

Civil rights was finally being addressed. The WASP culture had little or no regard for the plight of native Americans, and any talk of gays was definitely not something that was discussed in public. I don't think Wayne was much different than most white Americans of those days. White privilege and supremacy were in their "heyday" in those times.

For me it just shows how far we have come since those days and really how far we have to go. I was never a big John Wayne fan but I think the generation before me "the greatest generation" were his biggest fans. Maybe it gives a little more insight into that generation?

Should they rename the airport - That would be up to the people of Orange County.

it was said, he avoided the draft so he could continue to shtup marlene dietrich...even though he was married with a few kids.

he apparently got a deferment because him being a father of 3 but it had more to due with his star rising just after making Stagecoach that he avoided going. he thought it was going to be a career killer going to war. funny that.

I guess my uncle who had two kids at the time, didn't qualify for that same type of deferment because he didn't make a hit movie. LOL

He was the role model of how young, patriotic men should be.

Now 50 years later we are condemning men who were schooled to be exactly like that.

Are we going to go back in time and start prosecuting everyone who said something racist? My god, no one from the 50s 60s 70s and 80s would come out of that unscathed. We can all hope to better ourselves with education, empathy, and understanding and become better people.

I've known that John Wayne was a member of the John Birch society since I was a kid. As sad as it may be, people tolerated them a lot more back then than they do today. Look forward. If we start down this path than we should also get really extreme and start vilifying this country's founding fathers - most of whom were slave owners.

"And when America found itself having a hard time facing the future, they looked for people like John Wayne. But since John Wayne was no longer available, they settled for Ronald Reagan and it has placed us in a situation that we can only look at -like a "B" movie."

Now we look for people like fucking donald fucking j fucking trump.

So we could have ended up with John Wayne in the White House? Sadly, it sounds like something republicans would do. They are all about perception over substance.

I don't know what worse: that Nancy Reagan refused to cancel the party (and warned guests not to talk about you-know-what) or that guests like Wayne didn't cancel that night.
