Hilarious Comedy Central sketch although the real story of Martha Mitchell, another Watergate Whistleblower is tragic.
- Martha Mitchell (Sept. 2, 1918 May 31, 1976) was the wife of John N. Mitchell, United States Attorney General under President Richard Nixon. She became a controversial figure with her outspoken comments about the government at the time of the Watergate scandal. ..John Mitchell and Richard Nixon's professional careers converged when, on New Year's Eve 1966, their law offices combined to become Nixon Mudge Rose Guthrie Alexander and Mitchell. Although their status as friends is debated, when Nixon was elected president in 1968, he appointed John as his Attorney General..
- John Mitchell, Attorney General Nixon administration.
Mitchell first came to national attention after she remarked to a television reporter that Washington DC peace demonstrations held in November 1969 reminded her husband of a Russian revolution. The statement, widely viewed as indiscreet, increased her notoriety and coverage in the media. She had the custom of having an evening drink, and then calling reporters with political gossip or information she has gleaned while rifling through her husband's papers or eavesdropping on his conversations. During this time, Mitchell's renown as an outspoken socialite grew, and she made regular appearances on talk shows and variety shows..she made the cover of TIME in an issue about the most influential women of Washington.
Her reputation for frank and uncensored talk, generally in support of Republican issues, led to her being nicknamed "Martha the Mouth" or "The Mouth of the South".
Nixon selected John to head the Committee to Re-Elect the President (commonly abbreviated to CRP, aka 'Creep') during the 1972 campaign. During the campaign, however, Mitchell had begun to complain to her media contacts that the campaign had engaged in "dirty tricks" to win the election. A week before the June 17, 1972 burglary of the DNC headquarters in the Watergate office building, the Mitchells had traveled to Newport Beach, California to attend a series of fundraising events. While there, John received a phone call about the incident and immediately held a press conference denying any CRP involvement. John then returned to Washington DC, encouraging his wife to remain in California to enjoy the sunny weather..more https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martha_Mitchell

(6,232 posts)Who was in the plane crash at the time carrying a lot of money? I can't remember. Maybe that didn't happen. My memory is strange. I was busy with young kids at the time.

(41,103 posts)who held her 'captive' apparently. And Nixon stating she 'was a drunk,' doctors claiming she was delusional/ crazy. All from what we deem 'toxic masculinity' today.

(3 posts)It was Dorothy Hunt, wife of Howard Hunt, who was killed in United Flight 553 in Chicago (at Midway). Her purse had $10,000. A Chicago TV newscaster sitting beside Mrs. Hunt was also killed along with Congressman George Collins and 40 others, and 2 people on the ground. There were several other people connected to Watergate on the flight. The very next day Nixon appointed his aide Egil Krogh as Undersecretary of the Dept of Transportation, meaning he would supervise both the NTSB and the FAA. 11 days after the crash White House Deputy Asssistant Alexander Butterfield was appointed head of the FAA. Within two months Nixon's appoinments secretary Dwight Chapin took a job with United Airlines in Chicago.
The investigations found that the crash was due to pilot error.

(46,037 posts)Martha was a true believer of Nixon. Initially she refused to believe the facts coming out about his conspiracy, her husband's role, and Watergate as it unraveled. That's why she drank.

(3 posts)Her husband John Mitchell and President Nixon, along with his aide Haldeman, did not want her to interfere with or expose their cover up of the break-in and their dirty tricks against the movement and Democratic candidates, especially Senator Muskie, the only Democrat who had a chance of beating Nixon in 1972.
