(19,192 posts)I take one 25mcg (1000 IU) Vitamin D tablet daily. I have Type 2 diabetes, and watched my sister, also a diabetic, suffer from cold after cold until she passed away from kidney failure at the age of 68 four years ago. I've been taking the Vitamin D supplement for 7 years, and in that time span I've had two colds, both of a mild nature. I'm not saying the Vitamin D supplement is the reason for this. I also practice impeccable hygiene, washing my hands often, and always after coming home from shopping etc. Since the COVID-19 virus has risen it's ugly head I've probably doubled my hand washing, in addition to wearing gloves and using hand sanitizer.
I hate respiratory tract infections, and since I have onset COPD I can't be too careful, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just relating my experience with Vitamin D supplements, and if they're the reason for my lack of respiratory illnesses, great! If not, it certainly hasn't harmed me in any way.

(19,192 posts)Vitamin D is a miracle drug. Hey, I'm going to continue to take it. Like I said, it hasn't done me any harm, and who knows, it might be helping?

(889 posts)Like you, I take a 1000 IU Vitamin D tablet daily. Thats in addition to the 1000 IU I get from my Centrum Silver multivitamin. And like you, Im careful about washing my hands, and not touching my face when out in public.
I just wish legitimate studies - like this Harvard one - would talk more about what they recommend IU wise. Too many of them just talk about D levels in the blood. But maybe the IU recommendation would vary too much from person to person.
Be safe.

(19,192 posts)You be safe as well. And say hello to the rest of the Howard clan for me. I grew up watching The Three Stooges, and believe it or not, I've never poked a single person in their eyes. So much for kids learning violence from TV, right?

Now, my cardiologist and family doctors also prescribed it.

(1,722 posts)It is extremely likely that I was exposed to CV-19 in mid January, in my own home, for two days. She had all the symptoms except pneumonia, and was quite sick. As usual, when exposed to cold or flu, I took high doses of vitamins A & D for about 3 days. I had minor symptoms and some fatigue for about a week. I am over 70.
I also use/used homeopathic medicines for cold/flu. They work very well for me.
