The swimming pools thing is a much bigger leap. Dr. Phil says 360,000 people die each year in swimming pools, but in reality the U.S. averaged only 3,536 unintentional (as in, not murder or suicide) drowning deaths each year from 2005 to 2014, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and that includes drowning deaths in other types of bodies of water, not just swimming pools.

No one ever thinks they'll be in the 2-3% or whatever mortality. The truth is many of the folks reading and seeing this stuff won't be alive in a few months.

though he's a surgeon. Neither are epidemiologists or public health experts, and their comments are malpractice, as far as I'm concerned.

I'd like to see them volunteer their grandkids as sacrifice for the economy and their personal wealth. They could sell tickets to fox news to cover their deaths.

Fri Apr 17, 2020, 02:33 PM
Apr 2020

Of course, he was also wrong in how he used the numbers.

The title implies that 2-3% of the total population of children might die. What Oz said was that the total number of deaths would only change by 2-3% if schools were opened. Two very different things.

With that said, the article in The Lancet, to which he refers, doesn't say either of those things. It says that if all that was done was to close schools, then the total mortality would be reduced by only 2-3%. It was making the point that more than just school closures were necessary in this situation. Certainly it wasn't trying to argue against school closings, but rather in favor of additional social distancing techniques.

And Dr. Phil is just an idiot.
