(45,380 posts)on the off chance that some of these job creators might keep paying some of their workers or create some new jobs with it instead of dividends and share buybacks. I'm sure it will trickle down to everyone eventually, just reelect GOP and Trump and see in a few years.

(64,852 posts)Dividends make sense. Those paid & reinvested into big funds help millions of 401k & IRA holders too.
Buying back stock just creates protection of execs. Most of those companies did not retire those shares. They held them in treasury so they're paying themselves the dividend & showing a better income statement. Plus it makes a shareholder revolt more difficult.
It has no intrinsic microeconomic value. Waste of billions.

(4,290 posts)That is the traditional translation of the French phrase "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche", supposedly spoken in the 17th or 18th century by "a great princess" upon learning that the peasants had no bread. Source: Wikipedia
And most of us are aware of what happened to that princess. History: it's time to repeat yourself. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go sharpen the tines on my pitchfork.

(4,473 posts)It was probably originally said by Maria Theresa, the wife of Louis XIV. It was certainly not said by Marie Antionette -- which, if you had read more than the opening paragraph of that Wikipedia article, you would have seen.

(63,172 posts)And it is indeed very shitty, it is 100% consistent with every piece of financial advice I've seen, heard, or read in the past three decades. It's either "get a better job," or else it's "just have more money."
In fact, I've seen pretty much the same advice offered here on DU more than a few times over the years.
So yes it's shitty, but let's recognize that it's shitty even if someone other than the idiot racist fuckhead Trump says it.

(2,689 posts)I mean in person, on stage in the big crystal cathedral. "I'm talking to the Lord -- and the Lord is telling me" -- places his hand on her forehead -- "You're going to have your job, you're going to get a better job, halleluia!. You'll get a job where you make more money. It's going to happen, praise god and Jesus. Say Amen!"
Trump is using the rhetoric -- but in his own stumble-mumble way -- of a preacher. And he's using it because he's been assured he is the "chosen one."
The man is not just any narcissistic nut job. He's a narcissistic nut job who believes that the Lord God Jehovah has chosen him to lead America . . .somewhere.
No wonder he gets so snippy at the media. They are being disrespectful to God's own fucking emissary. And God's own fucking emissary has the nuclear codes and virtually 100% corporate backing so he can blow up the world and/or the American economy.
