Dividends make sense. Those paid & reinvested into big funds help millions of 401k & IRA holders too.
Buying back stock just creates protection of execs. Most of those companies did not retire those shares. They held them in treasury so they're paying themselves the dividend & showing a better income statement. Plus it makes a shareholder revolt more difficult.
It has no intrinsic microeconomic value. Waste of billions.
