(8,703 posts)No more money for Florida. Start state taxation to cover your damn storms. We are sick of forking cash into the state that will be hit hardest with climate change and does least to oppress it coming. Oh, and pay back Medicare you sleezy, criminal bald shit bag. That damn slick dome slides up trumps generous size ass like a golf ball into a basketball goal.

Southeast Florida, Palm Beach County, Broward County, and Miami Dade county are heavily Democratic. That represents a bit over half the voters in the state. But gerrymandering has fucked that majority.
Does anyone remember the 2000 election that Al Gore won because of those three counties? Well, turns out the Republican Supreme Court said, fuck off, appointed George W. Bush as president and then said that their reasoning could not be used again, anywhere, for any reason.
Don't knock Florida. It is a blue state being fucked by a Republican legislature and a governor whose electoral majority is questionable due to thousands of "lost" votes.
Everyone likes to laugh at "Floriduh." How about some sympathy. After all, we are a state that is occupied, abused and ruled by a Republican minority. "Occupied" is the operational word. Think of Paris during WWII. Many of the French joined the resistance. But what they could do was limited until they were liberated. So here's a cry for help. We need a Democratic president and senate to pass laws to liberate us from the tyrants who call themselves Republicans.

(2,860 posts)I've lived in Florida for most of my life and have voted against these assholes every single time. I despise Rick Scott and Marco Rubio. We have no representation in the senate with these two oath breaking useless parasites in office. It's long past time for them both to go back to private life.

(3,693 posts)A pandemic is a once in a century event. Hurricanes are an annual event.
Florida is proved to be badly managed by the fact that the state ignores known, needed, recurring maintenance.
Capitalism doesn't believe in rainy-day funds, and the rich are 'so fearful' of running out of richness that they willingly sacrifice your children to the god of corporate wealth.
The USA is a rich nation that is full of it...

A hurricane is an act of nature. Poor budget planning such as in Illinois is an act o fman.

(2,958 posts)Illinois's budget has been in a bind for some time not due to pandemic but in stead over promising retirement benefits to public employees. A couple of years back the government attempted due adjust benefits only to be overruled in a lawsuit.
were talking about emergency federal funding to deal with the pandemic.
Scott is whining about having to bail out other states that need emergency funding. Hes essentially saying that states which have mismanaged their finances shouldnt get emergency funding. (And of course, he will decide what mismanaged means.)
By Scotts logic, if Florida has done such a great job of managing its finances then it wouldnt need to take federal funding when an emergency strikes. But of course, Scott will immediately request federal funding as soon as Florida gets hit by an hurricane which he should by the way, because when one state suffers a massive natural disaster then we should all pitch in to help.
But he wants to deny that help to other states, which makes him a massive hypocrite, which is the point of the graphic.

(1,639 posts)From what I have read, most of the money in the Federal coffers that goes to "bail-outs", federal aid, what-have-you, comes from the more populous and prosperous Blue States. Without their taxation dollars, many of the Red States would be worse off than just their general ignorance and lack of tolerance for a changing world creates.
This is not to denigrate the humanity or needs of those in Red States. And I am certain that different sections of those areas contribute to the common good of this country as well.
What bothers me is not only the divisiveness in this country that is being weaponized by Trump and Co., but the resistance to change that is absolutely necessary to cope with dangerous, larger-scale changes that have been happening all around us whether we approved of them or not.
Some people seem determined to turn the world back to 1950's (or even 1850's) social norms when we are facing problems that must be faced with 21st Century technology, and clear--forward thinking--resolve. And many of the people contributing to that technology and providing that thinking would be shut down, closeted or shackled if those antiquated social norms were reinstated.
Oh, good grief! --as Charlie Brown would say. I just have to keep climbing up on that soap box. I'd switch to body wash instead, but those products also come packaged in boxes.

(10,421 posts)Between the climate change, the entitled assholes, alligators, and politicians who care more about making money than their constituents, I don't want to move there. My MIL lives there, and my husband has talked about moving there after we retire. We talked about it tonight, and, frankly, if they want to open up and sacrifice the elderly and vulnerable on the altar of Mammon, I don't want to live there.

(6,930 posts)Hell it's bad enough in Kansas in July and Aug and we're a few miles from any ocean. Used to think how neat it would be to live in a State that was warm during the winter months. But...with climate change the winters now in Kansas are nothing compared to 40-50 years ago.
Hell it was 72 degrees in Wichita on Super Bowl Sunday--Feb 2nd. Instead of throwing another log on the fire I was out on the deck in shorts drinking a cold one.
