There were some exceptions, but if given an actual choice, I'd rather avoid those anyhow.

Seeing this does not surprise me. It is how I have always seen buffets anyhow. I just picture some parent "cleaning" their kid's dirty hands then touching the serving utensils. Pretty soon, I can't stand the thought of dining buffet style. I would either cook at home only or get dangerously underweight if buffet style dining was all there was. It's just gross to me. Maybe I am a bit of a germophobe, but still...
